What would you recommend for ST4 to top $500 million box office?

Throw everything and the kitchen sink at it. CumberKhan, Shatner, Borg, Timetravel.

Trying to be different and all Guardians of the Galaxy like is doing nothing for the franchise.

Iconic sci-fi characters bumbling about on present-day Earth is an idea that can only really be done once.
To be more clear, I think he meant that they should use a story idea that has crossover appeal, like TVH's did. Not literally reuse TVH's story.

As I suggested somewhere upthread, bring in ALL the big names at once. I'm sure that would bring in viewers by the baleful.

Or they see the two magical words that turn them off completely, "Star Trek".

Give it a catchy name that doesn't necessarily equate immediately to Star Trek, like Stardate Armageddon.

I believe Tom Hanks is a Star Trek fan.
So is Mila Kunis. I wonder what kind of character she could play. A Romulan perhaps?

james mcavoy as picard is quite cool
Are we forgetting about Tom Hardy? He's even got a distinctive voice.

Yes, he is. In fact he wanted to play Zefram Cochrane in ST:FC but it conflicted with his work on That Thing You Do! so he (reluctantly) had to bow out.
A shame really. But James Cromwell was pretty good too.

Beyond's pre production was a train wreck. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to have a first time director (Orci) direct a crucial film in the series?
No one, fortunately. They just took time working up the courage to tell him that they didn't want him.

My recommendations:
- A story idea that appeals to mainstream audiences (e.g. like TVH).
- More comedy (again like TVH).
- No more "some vengeful bad guy trying to destroy enterprise" story (TVH again?)
sorry about too many references to TVH, but that was the original ST4 after all
They could pull a "Back to the Future Part II" and have this crew go back to 1986 and try to avoid running into their original counterparts. I'm only 3 quarters serious.

- Get Abrams to direct again. He is a more coherent story teller than Lin.
Lin is good but Abrams adds title cards. :bolian:

Maybe someday, once they've run out of words to tack onto "Star Trek". For now, they feel that they need that in the title and it's probably a good move.

Seeing as JJTrek introduced the penchant of dropping the subtitle and appending a word to the end of "Star Trek", I suggest they take some inspiration from the Carry On films:

Star Trek Follow That Klingon
Star Trek Up the Wormhole
Star Trek Don't Lose Your Phaser

And so on.

The only thing that will make a Trek movie become a blockbuster is a successful TV-show behind it.

Star Trek has never been a blockbuster, even when successful TV series were on the air.

For definition's sake, I'd say anything between $100-499 million is a "blockbuster" and $500 million+ is a mega-blockbuster.

Aaaand this is the biggest problem the franchise faces and for whatever the reason the rest of the world are completely wrong. Which they are. Nail on the head.

The Star Trek stigma is only half true. Both 09 and ID did a really good job of reimaging the brand. But they came out so far apart (and again with BEY) that some of the old description (for lack of a better word) was able to creep back in. And neither CBS nor Paramount did much to sustain the image in the interim.

That, above all, needs to change. But, once again, BEY falls off screens, Disco gets delayed, and Star Trek goes back into its closet of a room to play with its Zork.

That sad thing is, with very little--yet continued and focused--effort, Star Trek could easily be made hip. And while it's never going to be on the same level as Marvel or Glow Sticks, with a little work it could easily be pushed into the Potter/Bond/FF/etc bracket.

Each of the three films has been seen as being a "tent pole." It's time to actually start putting up the damn tent.
