What would you like to see change for season 2?

I'm glad someone questioned the assertion that Detmer was a well known character - or at least better known that ensign Kim from VOY. It really seemed that Ceridwen was relying on head cannon (not to pile on as Ceridwen already admitted as much). The only things I know about her is that she has an eye implant, is a lieutenant, and occasionally pushes the spore drive button - other than that, I got nothing.
I don't think there is a parallel between Detmer and Kim either. I mean even the original post called Kim 'Harry'. What is Detmers first name? What is there of any note about her? She's almost an extra, lol.

Lots of important problems with Discovery have been discussed in these 8 pages, and I hope they all get fixed.

I'd like to add the problem mentioned in my signature:

I want to throttle whoever’s dumbass idea it was to gamify continuity, trading the sense of a stable world necessary for the development of emotional and thematic through-lines for a facile “spot the reference” game intended to glut media consumers with smug, masturbatory self-satisfaction because they can recognise tribbles or whatever.

This was actually written in April 2017 and refers to the Abrams movies, not Discovery, but I think Disco is much worse about it than even Abrams. (Perhaps because of its insistence that it is set in the Prime Universe.) Yes, we can all see the tribble on Lorca's desk, and we're able to notice the nod to Hoshi Sato in Empress Georgiou's imperial title. But having a computer listing off captains for Saru isn't continuity; it's a fan handjob (a "fanjob"?). Meanwhile, Discovery is mutilating the very core of Sarek's character and doesn't understand why we're grumpy.

One time I was at a meeting at a Catholic school that was redoing its mission statement, which was something like, "Grounded in the Catholic tradition, we will educate leaders to have moral vision and critical thinking for the betterment of society." Somebody in Theology asked, "Why doesn't the mission statement mention the real purpose of our university, according to ex corde ecclesiae, which is to draw us closer to Jesus Christ, Who Is Truth?"

One of the administrators was overheard muttering, "We put in 'Catholic,' and now you want 'Jesus,' too?" Thus revealing that this administrator neither respected the mission of the school nor really had even a very clear idea of what it was. She just wanted to put in enough Catholic "fan service" -- a few words here, an Aquinas quote there -- to mollify the Catholics while doing something entirely different.

That's pretty much how I envision the executive producers of Discovery. There are one or two obvious exceptions to that in the writer's room (it would be pretty insane to accuse Kristin Beyer of not caring about the source material)... but, at least as I perceive it from the audience, not nearly enough.

My point is Discovery had the time in 15 episodes to tell compelling stories about its six main characters. That they mostly did not is a fault of execution. They decided it was more important to construct a constantly-churning plot arc that the characters had to bend to serve - particularly after the end of Act 1, when any pretense of character development for the non-Burnham characters (except Ash, to a limited extent in the final episode) went out the window.
Respectfully, I disagree. I feel like I have a good understanding of the characters, and their relationship to Burnham. It's Burnham's story and I'll not grouse over the fact that she gets the lion's share of the development. Oh, and also Sarek, who, in my opinion, has some of the best development the character has had since Star Trek 2009.

Regardless, I am working my hardest to not do what was listed in your message-I will not compare to other shows-period. Regardless of my personal antipathy towards nuBSG and GoT, I simply find it an exercise in destruction of personal enjoyment to stack up DISCO the list of "favorite shows" to knock it down.

If individuals don't like DISCO-fine. But, dislike it on its own merits, not because it isn't nuBSG :brickwall:

Yes, because a character's first name is essential to knowing them as a character.

She's not Harry Kim. Or Travis Mayweather. Or Hikaru Sulu. The characters on DISCO that equal them are Stamets and Saru. Kayla Detmer and Ariam are pretty much glorified extras. Like the guys who sit next to Sulu or Data when Chekov or Wesley aren't there. They could develop them like they did with O'Brien who went from glorified extra to reoccurring guest star to regular on a spin off. The potential is there.

What? That curly haired guy in the first season? He wasn't important.

I feel I was already plenty chastised for my comment about Detmer, not sure why it has to keep being litigated for three pages.

Her first name is Keyla, by the way.

Absolutely... however I think it just generated some pointed discussion. It happens :bolian:
