No need to move the captain's chair aside; there's a perfect open area in front of the Helm/Nav console. I've always pictured a hatch that lifts to reveal a companionway down to the next deck. A simple rectangular marking on the carpet would mark its location.

Of course that would leave us with another "why didn't they send down the shuttlecraft to rescue Sulu" conundrum for every time in the original run they were trapped on the bridge...

To me that's kind of the point. It doesn't look how the physics on earth would make us expect it to. E.g., strong must be thick. If the engines create a warp bubble ariund the ship as a whole, they don't need strength themselves. Maybe. Aesthetically it looks very nice with those graceful struts. My two cents.

And, as I've mentioned before, the nacelles atop those tall, slender pylons create a subliminal impression of masts and sails. Well, sort of.

If the writer of fiction says it is so, and obey's the laws of the universe he creates, then that's how it works. Period. Your best bet is to demonstrate how the writer's rules are inconsistently applied within the story. I'm sure Star Trek is rich with factual conflict.

Or maybe a platform that lowers the captain's chair several decks to "the battle bridge?" Straight out of Starblazers.

There could be a alcove to the right of the engineering panel with one of those three sided ladders leading down into the ship.

The point of this thread was what would you change on the filming model. Those flimsy struts have been the bane of those who built the enterprise models for years.

^^ MJ's initial concept was to have some sort of dome arrangement instead of the dish antenna, but he was overruled by someone who wanted more visual detail.

I wasn't a fan of the dome, it looked like the nipple of a baby-bottle.

One detail I'm not crazy about is the external cylinder-shaped piece at the back of the bridge housing. That's what led Franz Joseph to off-set the bridge interior 36 degrees to port.

So I would eliminate the fixture that FJ took for turboshaft housing, and replace it with a roomier and more general structure that cradles the aft side of the bridge exterior.

And if I did one more thing I would scale the 1701 up a little, maybe make it 10 percent larger, to get more room inside.

Well, if you go by the hangar deck interior model, instead of the Enterprise Incident graphic and behind-the-scenes information, she is already easily 10-20% larger. (This is how I lean for my personal canon.)
