What would Roddenberry think?

You got a list?
For one thing, he would be furious with Uhura being involved with Spock instead of Kirk.
Why? Uhura and Spock flirted in TOS. Uhura and Kirk, not so much.

Barring the introduction of Janice Rand to the cast of STXI, I tend to think Roddenberry would have been extremely annoyed that the one stable romance in the entire story doesn't involve his All American Boy.

But I only say this in light of that insufferable Gary Stu insert that was Wesley Crusher...

I wonder what they would think of Space:1999. It's all surreal and supernatural. It's called dramatic liscence. check out the Twilight Zone science.

Space 1999 was dramatic imbecility. It's license was revoked.

Was the idea that a nuclear explosion can hurl the moon at several dozen times C, sans dilation issues, only to slow down to mere millions of MPH within convieniently place star systems.... yeah, screw it. :P

You know, however absorbed in the fannish in-group one needs to be to use "Mary Sue" as a term of criticism, one has to be at least twice so to even know the term "Gary Stu." :guffaw:

No romance for Kirk in WNMHGB, TMP ( not counting the ship ;) ) and other episodes/movies, so I doubt GR would mind.

I don't think he would have liked the latter seasons of TNG, either - and I very much doubt if he would have liked DS9 at all.

But you know what? While I honor him for his contribution and for coming up with the idea, and I love TOS, the show that was closest to his vision, I think his concept of Humanity's Glorious Future (overcapitalization done deliberately here) was simply too constrictive. So while I love TOS, and while I would never want Trekdom to forget completely his optimism - that is one of the things that makes Trek Trek - I don't want to go back to the days when humans were as thoroughly "evolved" as Gene envisioned. It's not realistic, but more importantly, it's too dull.

QFT.

Can you imagine GR approving "The Drumhead" or allowing one of his captains to be assimilated by the Borg? Maybe I'm dead wrong, but I can't.

I can imagine him approving The Drumhead. It was a great anti-McCarthyism type of tale. Sci-Fi needs those kind of stories on occasion.

Having Picard assimilated by the Borg was a brilliant move, especially since he was later restored to his previous Humanity. It gave the character a whole new dimension. It could have also given Patrick Stewart several ways out of the show if he didn't renew his contract.

He could have been...

  • killed off
  • rescued and promoted to Admiral
  • rescued and then decided to retire
  • rescued and forcibly retired from Starfleet because of physical and psychological trauma, much like real-life war veterans with PTSD and/or missing limbs
Any of those ideas could create great drama. GR would have to have his head up his ass not to at least consider those ideas. Also, that would let Riker take command full time, giving us a captain who's more Kirk-like and satisfies those fans who didn't like the bald Frenchman.
