What Would Jellico Do?

Cohagen was the one who liked cornflakes, though. Jellico seems more like a Wheaties kind of guy. 2% milk, sliced bananas and strawberries. Same thing every day, because he likes things a certain way.

Jellico feasts only on the tears of his subordinates.
It's really unfair how the character was perceived by fans; he didn't have time to acclimate within the confines of the Enterprise, he had an objective and it needed to be within the parameters of his vessel. If he became the CO for a longer period of time I think the senior staff would've found a union with him, Jellico was not a bad guy... he just wasn't Captain Jean-Luc Picard. If you recall, Picard was a tight ass in the 1st season of TNG, I guess first impressions can shadow who the real person is and then make it gospel.

Riker disobeys the very first order that Jellico gives him and Jellico is the one to blame!

Riker: "I thought when you gave that order, it's was really up to me to decide if I was an order to obey to or one to just dismiss...."

Sure, why not...

Said of Jellico...

"Honestly the Enterprise bridge crew made complete asses of themselves in the two episodes where Jellico was in command. He was intelligent, commanding, made every right move, and asked NOTHING out of the bridge crew that was unreasonable.

It seems to me Picard's rule-by-consensus model has a serious flaw, in that it softens the members to the actual stresses of being in, you know, a military. Yes, Starfleet IS a military for all intents and purposes, that has been made clear numerous times. It's not a peace keeping force or purely for exploration, they are performing military operations where death is expected.

So this whole idea that Jellico has to ASK his first officer to do anything appalls me.

Yes Troi, you should get out of your @*$#!-ing pajamas and wear a uniform.

Yes Georgi you ARE expected to get the changes to the primary sub-system relays done in time for combat.

Yes Riker, you are supposed to act like the second in command, not a petulant wounded child.

For Q's sake, the only one who acts with any sort of professionalism is the @$*#! robot! Data seems to flourish under the strict military rule of Jellico. He is tactful, technical, and responsive.

I would piss myself if Jellico and a crew of Datas were coming after me with a garbage scow, much less a Galaxy class ship.

Jellico proves himself to be an exceptional diplomat, a brilliant strategist, and a people person. He puts his ego aside to do what is necessary to get Riker off his sorry @*$#! and put to work.

Honestly the whole thing has me up in a tizzy. I'm embarrassed for the senior officers of the Enterprise, and I'm impressed by Jellico.

Why does the music in the show act like he's the bad guy!!!???"

My thoughts...

1. I've already stated that he should have stuck with the three-shift rotation, and explained why.
2. Change that to "a crew of Data's and Worf's". Android efficiency might be scary, but add Klingon bloodlust, and the whole Cardassian Empire should be standing in puddles of yellow.

When Picard asks Riker to dock the saucer section and the other section manually. He didn't tell him why he wanted it and Riker obeyed without question so why is it now that Jellico has to explain his orders to Riker? Especially since these orders are in no way unreasonable or dangerous. Has Riker grown to be an ass over the years?

Cut scene from Chain of Command--

Jellico: You really got a swelled head after that Borg thing some time back. Well let me tell you, any other officer could've done what you did. You were just in the right place in the right time!

Riker: How dare you? You decided to go there huh?

Jellico: I did. You learn a lot chatting with Shelby.

There's only one answer to all this. Bring in Ronny Cox for a voice appearance in Lower Decks and let Jellico and Riker go at it. Have Jellico transfer an officer to the Titan to treat Riker how Riker treated Jellico for revenge.

Or they could fight each other in a duel of Anbo-jyutsu, the supreme twenty-fourth-century martial art.

I doubt that. I think the majority of people will always be on Riker's side.

Why can't we say that neither one was completely right?

Riker was right in that it WAS his responsibility to point out any actions by his CO that might be mistakes. That has long been accepted.

In my judgment, Riker was right about the fourth shift, and he attempted to make Jellico aware of the problems it was creating. If Enterprise had had to fight with that fourth shift active, she might have been blown to ions. You still think Riker should have held his tongue?

In my judgment, Jellico was right about not acknowledging Picard's covert mission. Part of any assignment of that nature is "you get caught, you're on your own". But, Riker still had the right to communicate his concerns. Jellico should have heard him out, then calmly declared that he was standing by his decision.

Twice, Jellico says "I don't have time to..."

Was this a way of informing the audience of Jellico's character or was it a (cheap?) method of generating drama? For Pete's sake, all the man had to do was deliver one to four sentences on why he'll be curt in the coming days and the entire situation would have been less contentious; sure, Riker might have still raised a complaint or two, but at least he'd know that his temporary CO wasn't being arbitrarily abrasive. If Jellico was so short on time, he should have abstained from waxing nostalgic over his children's drawings and spent that minute elsewhere.

What I don't get is that Picard approved of Kurn's abrasive and no-nonsense style of command. Yet Kurn was even less tolerant and accommodating than Jellico. Doesn't that suggest that if Riker had spoken to Picard about it he would have said "Suck it up! You are under his orders for Pete's sake!"
