What would be a deal breaker for you in Discovery?

I have to agree with the sentiment that if it's boring, then that would be a deal breaker. I've done it before with the third season of ENT. Certainly, I don't owe it to Star Trek to watch a series that I feel is wasting my time.

We all love Star Trek (in general), otherwise we wouldn't be posting here. The particulars of the Star Trek universe is where we all differ. There are a few that love all five series and all the movies, but I would imagine they are in the minority. We all have our favorite piece of the Star Trek universe.

I watched every boring episode of VOY and ENT so I guess I have a pretty thick skin when it comes to Star Trek. The only things I can foresee stopping me from watching are financial destruction, not being able to afford it, or dying.

Well, "Deal Breaker" within the boundaries of watching it when it's released versus watching it in a staggered way over a few years. Can't entirely be done with Star Trek afterall.

If it's too ponderous - but also if it's too fast paced like the JJ stuff. I can't abide either poles. A degree of equilibrium between action and some thought provoking stuff would be great.

1. If it's dull and boring - and that pretty much applies to any TV show.

2. If it disrespects Trek that has come before. Not if it differs, or has canon violations, or anything like that.. but actual disrespect. The TATV episode of Enterprise is pretty much the only time I can think of that something like what I'm talking about has happened.

I really liked the first two Stargate series, so when the third came around I was hoping, it would be good, but I hated it. The main problem was, that I detested the characters so much, that I was rooting for them to all die in a horrible way. I can watch a series, where I hate a character or two, but the majority should be interesting and likeable to me. Ideally there should be one or more characters, which I really love. I just want to be able to root for characters. So I am hoping that it will be different with DIS than it was years ago with SGU. I can watch all kinds of lame or repetitive stories as long as I like the characters.

Yeah, I struggled through the first season of SGU. I feel it actually picked up a bit in the second season, but by that time the damage was already done.

I just want a show of general decent quality that's entertaining, exciting, and if it can manage at least a little intelligence on the side then so much the better.

Or as Nimoy once said "Star Trek is full of charm and humor" and I really hope Discovery has that. Give me characters to care about going on exciting adventures. Everything else is negotiable. If it's a plodding river of dullness I won't stick with it.

If there's a Ferengi in it (and there shouldn't be) I won't watch it. I hate those creatures.

If they spend to much time trying to beat me over the head with morality shows, I won't watch.

If they have episodes where the forehead alien of the week is simply a metaphor for some controversial aspect of humanity, I won't watch. If they do this once, I'll forgive them and keep watching, but two of those shows in a short season and I'm outa here. If you want to deal with some controversial aspect of humanity, then do with humans.

So basically, your dealbreaker is if it's Star Trek... ;)

If the first 15 to 30 minutes of the premiere is boring, that's it. That's how I lost interest in Enterprise, Insurrection and Nemesis. I couldn't even sit through the rest of it. Can't stress it enough--Discovery has to be careful about it's premiere.

The first 15-30 minutes of every Trek pilot so far have been boring as sin, I'd at least sit through episode 1 in its entirety, if it were me.

Me too - I actually really liked SGU come its end, but by then it was too late and there were about 6 of us watching. The bit where he's walking round the ship totally alone watching everyone sleep is a strange metaphor for their audience.

I struggled through the first season of SGU, but my heart just wasn't in it. SGA Season 5 also got a bit annoying; there were some great episodes but it had earned it's cancellation, unfortunately.

Not being able to watch it...oops too late.

I can't understate how obnoxious putting this series on a pay subscription service is. I am completely honest when I say it's already got a big strike against it.

Otherwise, I won't mind if it doesn't fit perfectly into the time period 10 years before TOS, but I want them to at least make an effort.

A talking black cat named Salem that saves the day each week.......other than that I'm pretty open.

I want a show that is engaging on every level. Story, characters, cinematography. All three of those are essential for producing a quality show. I'll certainly give the show several episodes to hook me, but that's it. Voyager and Enterprise destroyed any and all capacity I had for sticking with a show that can't hook me quickly. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tested that limit and I bailed as a result, and I only returned because of the level of high praise it received in the back half of its first season. There are too many great television shows, science-fiction or not, for me to waste time a show that's wasting my time.

Graphic violence and/or gore.

Graphic sex and/or nudity.

Either one of those would have me quickly abandon the show.
What level of sex or nudity would you find acceptable?
Like clearly sharing a bed, or clearly not wearing clothes but with clever camera angles so you don't see PG13 skin?
Or you'd prefer such concepts to simply not exist in DSC?
Just curious what peoples threshholds are
