What would a fourth season have looked like?

...Alan Dean Foster had been asked to supply a two-part Klingon script for a fourth season.

You're somewhat misremembering what you said in 2008, Therin old pal. :)

In the latest trade omnibus reprints of the TAS adaptations ("Star Trek Logs"), Alan Dean Foster explains that the final two-thirds of "Star Trek Log Seven", about Kumara the Klingon, was actually from a two-part script he pitched, and then wrote up, during Season Three of TOS. When he submitted it, he was asked to resubmit... "if" there was a Season Four.

Sounds like he wrote up the script on spec.

Apologies. My books are in storage, or I would have checked the exact wording this morning.

Since that 2008 post
, I was able to send a message to him at a convention, asking about the script he wrote about in the essay, specifically if he remembered the title. He apologised that he no longer had the script, nor remembered the title, but was grateful he had it on file at the time he was attempting to meet Ballantine deadlines. What I didn't think to ask is whether he was commissioned or if he did the script on spec.

I can edit my 2018 post if you like.

In short, if Alan Dean Foster had a script lying around for a fourth season of Star Trek, it's something he had written on spec before his professional career got started, not something anyone asked him to write for the show.

Correct. As I originally speculated in 2008 in an earlier thread. He was asked to resubmit if the series got renewed. So probably on spec, in the footsteps of David Gerrold.

I think some of the cast would have left. Especially if the scripts were of the same quality as season 3. According the book 3 of "These are the voyages", James Doohan was pretty dissatisfied with the last seasons writing.

Did he have some other steady network TV gig ready for him? That's a pretty plum job to walk from, esp. i n 60s era TV, where so much of the writing was not so good.

Nah, the crew are required to point their sideburns. But the guest stars, now they'll have some righteous muttonchops going on.

I dunno. The writers' room would have had a different dynamic than Season Three of TOS.

_______________

When "Phase II" was coming together, Shatner would only committ to 13 episodes. He was hoping for a motion picture career and he was keen to step back from TV roles. Decker was to be groomed to ascend to the captaincy, with Shatner a possible Sweeps Week guest star.

Whether Kelley, Doohan, Nichols, Takei and Koenig stuck around would have depended on how well their characters were served by the scripts. Takei was the one that had to be coaxed back (for ST II and ST IV especially). The younger actors, Decker and Ilia, might have captured the writers' attentions, especially with no Kirk around. Xon, as "the Spock character", probably would have had plenty to do. (I remember when ST II was happening, there was an excitement about having Saavik and David to be fresh, young leads of any spin-off.)

Would the scripts have plenty for two doctors to do, or would Majel Barrett start suggesting retirement activities to De Kelley? ;)

I think you are talking about Phase II, and not a hypothetical Season 4 (1969-1970).

Season Four would have been of the same but with maybe one of two new faces perhaps! And another twenty four episodes would have taken the shows count to over a hundred episodes! :techman:

True. I carried over thoughts from another thread.

Gerrold's "The World of 'Star Trek'" wouldn't get published until 1973 and I think his final chapter was very important in the thinking that went into changes in "Phase II" and especially TNG. So some of those ideas, such as the captain not always leading landing parties, and transportation to planets not always being mundane/easy, were probably still percolating. Also not sure if Gerrold would have been tempted back, with several of his pitches in Season Three not proceeding.

Filmation's TAS, and authors such as Diane Duane, added new Starfleet aliens. Maybe that would have happened?

Spock would have an afro!

Afro-ed Carl Spock has been a fixture here for years.

See the quoted post below!

It all started in a caption contest many years ago when I added an afro and shades to this picture:

And Carl Spock gained a face.

Shatmandu came up with the name many other posters like cooleddie came up with various gags, jokes and occupations ( undercover cop/pimp/drug dealer) Thusly Carl Spock became a meme that seems to have spread beyond the TrekBBS.

He is the king of 70s Spoxploitation badass dudes.
