Nice press for the documentary, but the interviewer is a bit of an idiot, particularly the comment about the show not worrying about canon.
True, but the interviewer made it sound like that's what made Deep Space 9 controversial.
Except this is a news report, not a drama. It's just sloppy interviewing.
The problem is poor reporting. The show was controversial at the time, but it had nothing to do with how canon was handled.
And they had lots of non-Starfleet regulars. TOS didn't have any; TNG just had a couple of recurring non-Starfleet characters (I'm thinking Guinan and Q, were they significant recurring characters I'm missing?) But DS9 had more non-Starfleet characters than Starfleet. They looked at things differently and there was even conflict between them. This made better drama, but it was certainly different from TNG where conflict was involving guest stars.
I think you mean Kurn. We never saw Mogh (cuz he was busy being dead).TNG had Mrs. Troi and I guess Gowron and Mogh sort of count. Even Alexander and Keiko who aren't Starfleet.

A fun three-minute primer from Moviefone on Deep Space Nine and What We Left Behind, with a special guest star.
