What We Left Behind - Documentary Update Confirms *Some* HD Remastering

I think we know the day is coming when it will happen. Something will come up and people will feel they can make money off it like when the tech to do it becomes less expensive. It might not even be done through legal means. Someday the average person will have access to tech who can do it and you might see bootlegged copies of DS9 bluy-rays.

Those would look terrible, considering that all the VHS, DVD, digital downloads and broadcast masters are derived from COMPOSITE interlaced video masters (D2 which is what Paramount was using for the Master edits, is digital but it stored Composite video not component).

Maybe if they did it today. We don't know how advance the tech will come though in the future.

Even advancements in 3d/2d comb filter technology will not undo the damage that composite video does to a video signal. It may smooth things out better, but really it’s “lipstick on a pig”.

Can't we have a dream!:)

You have to realize that what you are suggesting is what is currently going on, on a consumer level, in Laserdisc circles. How to get the best signal from Laserdisc in today’s digital age? And really it’s to plug the yellow composite cable into your TV as your TV will have a more advanced 3-D comb filter than what your Laserdisc player has for converting the on disc composite video into S-Video.

Really the only major difference between Laserdisc and D2 videotape is that Laserdisc is analog composite video, whereas D2 is digital composite video.

When you factor in blu-rays sales and streaming revenue, DS9 in HD would likely be profitable.
I don't know how many times it needs to be said - the market for physical media is just not there any more. The DVD boom of the mid-2000's is long behind us, and the numbers for sales are dwindling year after year. That's why major studios are transferring to MOD services for catalog titles, which DS9 really is, objectively.

This makes me sad. I for one don't want the internet to infiltrate my tv/film viewing as it has so many other areas of life. Plus I'm too poor to buy a new computer necessary to watching streaming. I love my DVDs.

Have they stopped promoting physical media when promoting new films for home viewing? Do they just say "stream it now?" I ask, because I don't watch commercials anymore. :alienblush:

Newest email update shows an animated frame of Captain Ezri for season 8.

...wait, what?! Did we know they were going to animate season 8 (or parts of it) and I somehow missed it?!

I didn't think there would be any animation. Is it to make it more like the TNG doc.

From the email:

At this very moment, our directors are up at Skywalker Sound (hey, what’s a little franchise-crossover between friends) putting final touches on our music and sound design.

Details at the Skywalker Ranch are highly classified, so we can’t show much…

…but director Ira Steven Behr wanted to give you a little sneak peek and point out the stages from afar anyway.

You’ll have to take our word that the the sound facilities here are world-class. We’re incredibly lucky to have their team of professionals (many of whom are DS9 fans themselves!) attentively looking out for the overall audio quality of the film, and putting their creative efforts into the design of our ANIMATED writers room season 8 sequences.

And because we can't show much from the Skywalker Ranch, instead we're doing to do you one better... give you your VERY FIRST GLIMPSE at that SEASON 8 ANIMATION:

No spoilers, except to say that Captain Ezri is back and certainly in charge of the situation! There's PLENTY MORE in store and we can't wait for you to experience it for yourself in the finished film.
Looks pretty good to me! I haven't seen the TNG documentary, so I don't know how it compares.

Wait, lieutenant to captain in a single year? I thought that was just for Kirk.

Happened in the books, too. Or at least in command of the Defiant. I think she may have only been a commander at the beginning of her command. Not sure since it's been years since I've read them.
