I like both TVH and TSFS, and I'm especially thinking of them today since we just lost their director.
In TSFS, I love it that Leonard Nimoy's
Mission: Impossible experience came in handy when giving each member of the team a crucial task to do in TSFS. The bit-part actors are often just scenery, and it was great to see them each have a vital role to play. And Uhura being a badass is always a favorite. :-) I loved Kirk's heart-felt lines about Spock's soul being his responsibility. And how touching was it at the end, when Spock didn't even remember his OWN name, but he remembered Kirk's? "Jim ... your name is Jim." Gets me every time.
I tend to like funny Star Trek less than most fans do -- "A Piece of the Action" and "I, Mudd" aren't among my favorite episodes, even though most fans love them -- and yet I loved TVH. Even though the movie was full of humor, it seemed to me that the characters were more
themselves in it than they were in most of the other movies, certainly more than in either TMP or TUC.
And I loved, loved, LOVED having a Star Trek movie with no villain in it. Or at least, one where the villain was human selfishness and short-sightedness, rather than an identifiable person as the antagonist. ("The Devil in the Dark" is one of my favorite episodes for many reasons, one of which is that the "monster" turns out to simply be a creature they're having trouble communicating with, rather than an actual villain.)
Although I think TUC is a good movie, I think it's bad Star Trek. Kirk and his crew (except Spock) are all portrayed as being severely prejudiced against Klingons, to the extent that they're at serious risk of undermining the peace process. That isn't the Kirk I remember from TOS, and I felt as if the writers had smeared shit all over my beloved heroes. Is a prejudiced Kirk more realistic? Probably. But I don't watch Star Trek for its realism.
I actually voted for TVH, but I could have voted for TSFS on another day.
I know a lot of people are planning to watch TWOK in honor of Mr. Nimoy's death, but I'm planning to watch TSFS tonight; it's not Spock's death that will help me deal with Mr. Nimoy's, it's his
rebirth.
