What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

After thinking about the trailer, the cause of the Burn suddenly seems obvious. In the trailer
Burnham and Booker have a kiss. Since all of Burnham's relationships seem to go bad in this show in overly dramatic fashion, don't be surprised if Booker is really an evil warlord who singlehandedly caused the Burn to take over the galaxy, and Burnham has to tearfully vaporize him (but not after blasting a hole into his chest Dr. Crusher style first).

Maybe he is or gets possesed by a Pah Wraith? ;)

What about the Mirror Universe, Section 31, the Thalosians and the appearance of Boreth, an obscure klingon planet known only from a single TNG episode?
The Mirror Universe is something of a pop culture sensation, given TOS Mirror Mirror is the origin of the "evil twin has a goatee" thing that is so en vogue these days. Given Kurtzman's fixation with black ops and shady intelligence services, Section 31 seemed a natural to be brought into the show, especially given he and Orci already brought it into STID. Assuming you mean Talosian, since I have no idea what a Thalosian is, then given they were from the only episode to feature Pike in TOS, it's perfectly understandable that if you're including Pike with the show, you'd also work them in somehow. I'll give you Boreth, but even then it was just a plot point in one episode, not something major for the season that got mentioned in the season's promotional material.

I really hope Booker turns out to be a candle ghost.

Or maybe the burn happened because everyone started to "evolve" into Salamanders and there wasn't enough people left to fly ships

Doesn't have to.

For all we know, DSC could ultimately end in a way that blatantly contradicts "Calypso" and everything in it.

Like I said, "Calypso" was written at a time where there were so many people behind the scenes getting hired, fired, rehired, etc. that whatever were the original plans for it, could have long since been abandoned by now.

The simple fact is, DSC is under no obligation to reference "Calypso" in any way, and if (as seems likely) it never does, there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it.
I don't see short treks as anything other than self contained stories that don't need to be followed up or relied on as canon

Except when they do, like Runaway which ties into season 2 nicely. That's how Tilly got to know Po. I love Po she's cool. Just it's a pity her planet wasn't an actual character. I wanted that cloud to become a giant death tentacle swatting ships.

I actually feel like working in Short Treks to the main plot kinda cheapens them. I would enjoy Calypso a lot less if they do eventually find a way to shoehorn it into the main arc of Discovery. Trek already suffers way too much from "small quadrant syndrome." Let some stories stand on their own.

It just occurred to me that if the Burn had just affected the Federation, then another race like the Klingon or Borg or even the Dominion would have just taken over.

Not necessarily, If the theory that there is no subspace based travel is true, then there would be no way for any enemy to get to any Federation world to conquer it. It would take decades at best to reach any world.

Haha imagine that?
Klingon generation ship heading for Earth and battle, meanwhile at home tech advances in the Sol system and when they do arrive oops.
