What Type of Bread Do You Buy?

I only ever eat bread at home when making bruschetta, for which I use a sourdough loaf with sesame seeds, which I slice myself, as it tends to taste fresher that way. Not a bread fan or snob at all. In fact, I don't even have a bread bin, I've been thinking whether it's worth buying one for such rare use.

I haven't eaten a sandwich in 20+ years. I prefer eating a hot meal to eating a sandwich. So I don't really buy bread.

I had a friend in school that called me "no bread man".

I'll get the occasional french toast at a restaurant.

GAH! Bread isn't just for sammiches! The Balsamic Vinegar with olive oil, dip some bread into it and eat with spaghetti.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

This board is creepy sometimes. I was JUST having this conversation at work today. And yesterday I had the same experience of discussing a different topic at work and then reading a post about it here, in a thread. Freaky. Two days in a row.

Anyway, personally, I tend to buy whatever white crusty loaf's been baked that day at the supermarket when I go shopping. So not a bread snob, though I also like the taste of the better stuff. Call me bread-ecumenical, perhaps.

What I DID learn today, from a bread snob at work, was all about the Chorleywood Bread Process. I had no idea this process existed, and most of the bread in the UK is still made this way. Quite extraordinary, really.

I have listening devices near all the TBBS mods. It keeps me in the loop.

A good loaf of bread and a nice hot soup...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Tomato soup with a colby-jack sandwich on freshly sliced toasted bread..... Roast beef with tomato and chedder on fresh bread with a side of potato soup...

...fuck. Debit card is tapped, or I'd be making a run to the Food City tonight.

What type of bread does Hoagie sandwiches fall under?

Oh, it's usually white.

I use sub rolls...usually wheat..for hoagies. I almost never use white bread, because TECHNICALLY it isn't a hoagie if you use flat, square slices of bread.

No, the bread I used for hoagies isn't flat white bread. It's sub rolls (apparently, since I've never heard of that term before now), but it's white on the inside.

Okay, now I'm confused, and I'm getting a headache.

My absolute favorite bread ever is the giant loaves of pumpernickel from the Colchester Bakery in Colchester, CT. But I'll pretty much eat anything with a high carb content! Sometimes I'll get in a mood where I'll bake a lot of bread... big whole-wheat boules, soft beer & cheese loaves, craisin and sunflower seed, cinnamon raisin, faux sourdough (Greek yogurt) ... I may have to make something tomorrow. :) I knead by hand. It's great for stress relief.

And if we want to get into regional sandwiches, here in CT we call them grinders.

For everyday use, I like boring old Stroehmann's king-size white bread. Occasionally I'll go nuts and buy a loaf of Martin's potato bread. And for very special occasions, nothing beats a loaf of fresh-baked sourdough bread. :)

Oooh, what kind of juicy things have you uncovered? ;)

^^^ Things that are too scandalous even for you to hear. There are some things you cannot unlearn. :shifty:

Blasphemy! I can't have a meal (any kind of meal) without bread.

You are of the Body. :borg:

The greatest food stuff in the world in my little opinion.

I can eat bread all day long;

Cheap crap white bread just toasted with a bit of olive-oil spread - I can eat the loaf
Toasted Bagles with low-fat cream cheese - I can eat the pack
Polish Sourdough bread, thinly sliced and made into buschetta - I will lick the crumbs off the plate
A simple white Grand Rustic, sliced in two with a bowl of home-made pea and ham soup - I'll eat both halves
Bajillion grain loaf, thick sliced with roasted tomatoes and peppers on it - get away from my loaf!

It is an addiction of mine, and really the main reason I go to the gym. Bread and wine are life to me. Everything else is just butter (gravy)

Hugo - On a olive and onion loaf at the moment

I use to have bread with dinner, until a few years ago. Now bread is only used for lunch or breakfast, if I'm having some toast.

With regards to the type of bread, it's generally the bread baked in the supermarket itself.

^^^Ooooh so do i!

We used to buy white bread all the time, but a few years ago, we switched to buying mostly wheat and other "grain" type breads.

Your heart will thank you for it, believe me!

Indeed - I have a flatmate who refuses to eat wholemeal bread, as he believes white bread is good for him. But it's other things he consumes which are really gonna do the damage to him. I forgot when I switched to wholemeal bread. Probably at 8 years ago.

Also switched to brown rice too. Would love to switch to wholemeal pasta (but that is too much for my liking)
