What specific subject would have wished DS9 fleshed out (more)?

I think they were more slashy thank Kirk/Spock, but then, I haven't seen TOS in a while, so I could be wrong...

Seriously, DS9 was the most groundbreaking Trek, they should have been the ones to do a genuine gay storyline. "Rejoined" and the "deviant" sexuality of the MU don't count!

Well, gay issues were also alluded to in Chimera....but something beyond allusion would have been greatly appreciated.

"Rejoined" ... don't count!
Why doesn't it count?

It was like "quintessential Star Trek" in that it all about a controversial topic without actually being about the topic at all.

That's sort of the point. Dress it up in an exaggerated costume to force people to take a step back and give it a more critical eye.

It's just too bad it was ruin by Farrell's (lack of) performance--especially considering Thompson nailed the hell out of it.

I'll just say, as has been said before, that it would have been an interesting and bold manuver if Ezri had been a guy.

That scene in "Past Prologue" where Garak puts his hand on Bashir's shoulder and says "I am so glad to have made such an interesting new friend today" is total slashfest. And pretty funny, too. And in "The Wire" drunk Garak says to Bashir "Let's go to my quarters!" and right when he says that he jams the cork back into the Kanar bottle!

Meh too obvious. Besides, it'd been done before.

From a potential writing aspect, I think they should have actually gone with the Ezri/Jake relationship. The possibilities!

LOL, and what makes that first scene you referenced even more slashy is that the whole episode Bashir is totally acting like a schoolgirl with a crush. Oh, and I did so love The Wire. I think Garak is truly surprised by the good doctor's capacity for compassion. And they freakin' hold hands in that episode! Oh, and there's this little non-slashy moment I enjoy when Bashir is holding the Kanar behind his back, telling Garak he'll give it back, and then passes it off to Quark. It's just so smooth and makes me laugh.

But upthread, I said "Rejoined" didn't count, well maybe it did a little, but it seemed like the whole point was Dax had been male and in love with "his" wife Kahn, so it was almost more like a ... transgendered thing? LOL I don't know!

You girls think way too much about this stuff.
:sigh:

And then there was the whole "eat my rod" bit.

Bashir: Is there anything you need me to do when you're gone.
Garak: Like what?
Bashir: I don't know. Any unfinished business?
Garak: Actually, doctor, there is something.
Bashir: Well, what?
Garak: If you go into my quarters and examine the bulkhead next to the
replicator you'll notice there's a false panel. Behind that panel is a
compartment containing an isolinear rod. If I'm not back within 78 hours I
want you to take that rod and eat it.
Bashir: Eat it?
Garak: Hmm.
Bashir: You're joking.
Garak: Yes, doctor. I am.
Bashir: Very funny(!)
Garak: Well, I thought so.
-- "Improbable Cause"

This is why I have a hard time believing anyone who says the subtext wasn't deliberate, at least on Garak's end. Whether or not Bashir was capable of responding in the same manner, however, is very much up for debate and I did not see evidence that he reciprocated Garak's feelings.
