Qonundrum, what's your opinion on Joe Jackson's cover from 1991? That was my first exposure to the song.

In my head, I'm playing "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" by the Platters ... mainly because of Seattle-area atmospheric conditions.

Thanks for namedropping (and asking, am honored!)

A little background: I had previously thought Joe was a one-hit wonder with the rather marvelous "Steppin' Out", a great song for sure... But upon listening to his cover of "Oh Well" -- I instantly adored it. The bass, guitar, and percussion from his cover of "Oh Well" are powerful and invigorating, indeed. (I can almost hear a low key piano chord blended in as well?) Genuinely classic and almost re-inventive, while remaining true to the Fleetwood Mac original of 1969. This is not an easy feat. It's a mindblowingly good one-up of the original that he pretty much makes his own -- of the likes that seem somewhat rare. Certainly not since the likes of covers such as Ike and Tina Turner's "Proud Mary", Nancy Sinatra's "Day Tripper", or Devo's take on "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction", and that one went to town on altering the complete tone and style... a cover so good that they effectively make it their own... Much talent...

Even better, the ending of Joe's version doesn't switch styles abruptly from rugged rock to, for lack of better phraseology, what can only be defined by me right now as "a somewhat jarring shift toward homage of the Greek deity Pan at the last minute" for the last minute. Which is not to say the new style introduced is bad, but it's completely unexpected. If anything, it's arguably jarring too much. Kinda like when Lucy removes the football just as Charlie's about to kick it, only reversed as far as the simile goes.

All that said, the Fleetwood original seems to have more instruments in play... but Joe's really makes use of the bass with drums and it's impressive. Both versions have stellar guitar, both of which are equally on par.

Part of the experience of music can include the cover art. It'd be difficult to improve upon the album art of the Fleetwood Mac original -- but replacing a then-controversial "drawn nekkid Adonis dude with impressive-yet-silly horse metaphor" for "Photo of Joe in a cliche Hanna Barbara-esque prisoner garb, complete with ball and chain to hint at something that the album title reads - with typeface colored in a way that reminds me of those goofy crayons that produce four colors when you write with them at various angles"... Actually, the artwork on the 1991 album cover ("Laughter & Lust") tells its own metaphors that are impressive in their own ways, despite the overall plainer and more generic look of the album cover art. (Indeed, note even the "T" in the last word. Looks somewhat like Justice scales... And for some reason, the also-cynical song "Love Parasite" by Fad Gadget also just crossed my mind, so before I go into a too far out-there tangent:

The overall arrangement of the visual elements for the Fleetwood Mac's album art is still better for its lack of seeming sparseness - even if the only message being suggested in the art is that "drawn nekkid Adonis dude" there is equated to metaphorically as "___ like a horse" (despite sadly and/or thankfully not showing the literal proof, unfortunately.) Not to mention, said horsey is in an open field that's surprisingly plain (and repetitive) in its own way too - but not in a chessboard sort of way. It's an interesting juxtaposition of both these covers, if nothing else...

...that, or it's nothing more than the old adage of "a cake is just a cake" - as Counselor Troi misquoting Freud had said to Data in "Phantasms", in a scene that plenty of neat little metaphors too and by 1994 nobody was interested in ciggies so supplanting that with cake why not? With mint frosting... yum...

Underrated episode, that one... very creepy and creative, one of season 7's more interesting entries IMHO...

But, I digress.

Both renditions more than hint at sexuality, in one form or another, which is par for the course. This could be observed regarding the artwork, the musical tone, and even - and least surprisingly - regarding the lyrics, of which they have their own metaphors of their own, complete with multiple interpretations - making it that much more intriguing...

The song is a classic, in both forms.

For the moment, I would side for Joe's version as being the best, but both are absolutely impressive, having their own strengths and weaknesses. Joe had the guts to try, and he definitely got it right. Big kudos.

Worst case scenario - a less-than-stellar cover would just have more people preferring the original, if they looked for it. One great example is "Venus" from Shocking Blue, 1969 - a great year for these sorts of songs...

I know a few people are unhappy House of the Dragon reused the theme. I also know Ramin Djawadi is a PHENOMENAL composer. I just don't think you can top this theme (although the Westworld theme comes close :) )

The next video from Comalies XX. Every bit as good as I thought it would be. Can't wait for this album.

A wrinkle in time Take what is left of my life
Before you go show me what it‘s like to finally know
The face behind the silhouette in this world I made
to be infinite
But within the expanse - I finally see
A world without you isn’t meant for me

So you think you can play guitar..
