From what I remember, Guaranteed was the only Level 42 album where Mark played a fretless bass on some tracks.

I think you are right. That, combined with Holdsworth's style of playing lent a different feel to many of the songs from anything before or since that they did. It's not my favorite album of theirs but it's interesting.
the Guaranteed era never reached this kind of "level"
