Hugo - does not have a complex genius

Every Ayreon album is a wonderful story on itself and on top of that they're part of a larger universe.

Also, Arjen and Anneke Van Giersbergen under the name The Gentle Storm released an album called "The Diary."
There are two versions of it, the Storm one which is prog/metal and the totally acoustic Gentle version.

I pretty much own it all.

Arjen is a great composer and utilises the talents of himself, his guest instrumentalists and power-metal choir magnificently.

The Theory of Everything took me quite a few listens to get into it, but it's really grown on me.

Anneke has been on my radar since discovering her through Devin Townsend and, again, Arjen maximises her range. The Gentle Storm is wonderful and I was listening to it on the train home tonight. STORM version.

I've just picked up Guilt Machine, a side project right from the middle of his depressive phase and, apart from a few lietmotifs sneaking through from his Ayreon pieces, it's pretty beautiful, especially Jasper Steverlinck's soaring voice.

I just got the Star One live album from 2003 in the post... £3.50 off eBay for a double.

Hugo - some fun rockin' music to listen to with Baba Rune tomorrow

Looks like I'll be collecting their works, as well.

Without embiggening that last video he looks a lot like Steve Harris.

It's the variety I like.

You get straight up power metal/rock with something like Flight of the Migrator album, gothic rock with Guilt Machine, romantic melodic prog of The Dream Sequencer, pure rock operas with The Human Equation or The Theory of Everything, 80's hair metal based on your favourite SF shows/Films (seriously, Wiki Star One), folky material with The Gentle Storm - all composed by one weird dude, and cast with every great prog or power singer in Europe right now.

Plus, as a little bonus, there's a 5-album saga detailing an aeons-spanning chronicle of a dying race, in a distant galaxy, attempting to regain their emotions. It's pretty wild, very very cheesy (Arjen loves B-Movie SF films), but filled with wonderful music and an utterly bonkers story.

Arjen also puts all of his Ayreon material up on YouTube in HD quality for everyone to enjoy - https://www.youtube.com/user/ArjenALucassen

Hugo - 23 years to catch up on

Arjen is a musical genius, and he also has that very rare ability that brings out the best and more out of a guest vocalist or instrumentalist and they love doing it and he uses analog synths, that is also one of the details that I personally like, I mean, on The Dream Sequencer you can't miss the Moog Taurus, and dealing with these beasties is hard, I hope he and Jean-Michel Jarre will have a chance to work on something together bet Arjen will love Jarre's studio.
