ah, jesus...the tears
...all my life, I give gladly to you,
all your life, you give gladly to me,
tell me why, then...
YES! There you go, HIjol - you got it, brother! The Artistry and Musicianship on display here, is impressive!
I love how it's the bass supporting the song, at first, whilst Johnette's singing what sounds like a typical love song. At the same time, there's this undercurrent of sadness in the guitar's feedback and distortion. Then, as the lyrics reveal more, the guitar almost drowns out the bass, in the end. And, at the end, there's Johnette's vocals persistantly pleading, almost as a litany:
Can't we stop hurting eachother?
Gotta stop hurting eachother.
Breaking eachother's hearts.
Tearing eachother apart ...
The guitar ends up overtaking even the vocals, with its heart-wrenching, tortured anguish and despair, and then the vocals just stop, altogether. It's good stuff! This song's an emotional bath! And, quite possibly, my favourite cover of all time. Far superior to the original, in fact, though I suspect Johnette Napolitano would disagree with that assessment ...
