What Should the Music be like in the New Star Trek series?

Assuming that the new 25th century Star Trek continuation series gets green lit, what would you wish for in regards to the musical score, or maybe even the theme/title music itself?

I think that the score should be recognisably ‘Star Trek’ though be fun, upbeat, adventurous and slightly bombastic, almost like it was in the early TNG days, but with a modern 21st century spin. For example, I believe that the unused alternate Star Trek: The Next Generation theme, which I think was composed by Jerry Goldsmith and/or Dennis McCarthy, would be ideal for the new series title music. Of course, it would need to be remixed slightly and modernised. There is precedent for Star Trek using old musical scores from the back catalogue, most notably in The Next Generation reuse of The Motion Picture theme and Picard season 3 using the First Contact main title music. It would be a waste not to use this little Star Trek gem at some point. :shrug:

The music in Star Trek has always set the series apart from other shows in my opinion, I am very disappointed when the music is generic and could be part of any TV action show.

When Stargate Universe came along it was way ahead of it's time. If it was on streaming today I'm sure it would have found an audience.

I loved the completely different musical tone they had, and would love Trek to so similar. Picard season 3, when Titan was boarded, had a fantastic score. And it was totally different to the rest of the show's music.

Just YouTubed the Stargate Universe theme, it’s too nonchalant. Needs to be something more memorable and catchy.

I’m thinking cross Star Trek with Star Wars and Indiana Jones! :D

If 'Legacy' goes ahead and the showrunner is Terry Matalas, then the score will probably be a constant drip-feed of old cues mixed together.
Well on your reference, I’d hire him. So hopefully Paramount+ (or Disney) will do so too. :D

Thumbs way high!!! :bolian::bolian::bolian:

Now yer talkin’!!!

Personally, however, I am an old Academy Grad out to pasture, not even lecturing at the Academy. I want an updated sound reflecting PineTrek back to the Mother Tune…

Maybe some of @Timeofnine’s playlist after all!

Ok, I have tried to reply to this post with my top 25 iTunes playlist but it repeats some of the tracks, so this is *not* a true top 25 as a result of the duplications. IMG_2405.jpeg Anyway, the point being, I meant that Terry should use *my* playlist, not his.

Can think of a few Carpenters tunes that could be worked in;

“Ticket to Ride”
“A Song For You” (sung to the Enterprise?)
“Good-Bye To Love”

100%.

I really liked SG:U. At the time there was some flak for being too different / trying to rip off nuBSG; I think there were some similarities in tone, but I always felt it was primarily doing its own thing.

My fav scene was when the Destiny first powered up inside a star. Had a very Vangelis vibe, IIRC.

Can't believe no one has suggested this yet. There's only one real song that should become the next Star Trek theme.

:lol:

...or we could just hire John Williams to do the score.

As long as Jeff Russo doesn't continue to write the main title themes for the series, I'll be happy. I haven't cared for his themes, which all seem to end with a crib from Alexander Courage's original fanfare, and haven't really had that much of a hummable core melody in the way TOS, TNG, DS9, and VGR did.

If Supernatural can use the 1970s and 80s rock catalog, why can’t Star Trek?

More importantly, what the hell did they do to rock n roll??? :rofl:

Berman sonic wallpaper.

I have to admit I am actually quite partial to Dennis McCarthy's Generations / All Good Things / Yesterday's Enterprise / Way of the Warrior score... ;)

I'd like to add my appreciation for SG:U's score, too. Funnily enough, I've often found myself re-listening to it lately.

As far as Trek works: I didn't mind Picard S3 except for the glaring anachronism of shoehorning a pseudo-TWOK score (and ship!) into the show. Not a fan of most of Russo's scores either tbh, for very much the same reasons as @Firebird stated. And no, we do not need Star Trek to sound like Star Wars... Yikes! I love That Other Star Franchise just as much as this one but they both need to keep to their own thing, not start trying to emulate one another. :)
