One... two is okay, but I watch season one all the time. I rarely even watch season three (been months since I saw a three episode).

Meh.. The Enterprise Incident, The Tholian Web, All Our Yesterdays, The Paradise Syndrome, Last Battlefield, For the World is Hollow... Hardly crappy episodes..

There's one-and-one-half good ones in your list there, somewhere...maybe. If you assemble parts.

Does the word "punk" mean anything to you, Dennis?

Not unless you're making a self-deprecating observation.

Hate on the lack of budget, not on the writing.;)

The writing was bad. Find another excuse.

Season 3 was bad because Roddenberry wasn't involved and they just tried to make it more weird than before. But there were some bright spots here and there. Some really good episodes but a lot of really bad episodes.

The budget cuts also effected the writing, particularly not being able to hire top talent, and not being able to pay for the necessary rewrites. Scripts that should've gone though the mill one last time got sent to the set, and we got shows that, while showing a lot of promise, ended up a little flat.

Roddenberry hired Freiberger rather than turn the show over to someone like Justman who understood it and wanted to produce it. Roddenberry was responsible.

Better yet, he could've not made the "Move Star Trek back to Mondays or I walk" threat and stuck it out for one more year.

NBC already made its decision and they weren't going to change their mind just because Gene Roddenberry threatened to leave. I think he was worn out and looking for an out.

My favorite season is either the first or second. Sounds like a cop out but I like both seasons for different reasons.

Season 2 had a little more fun. Season one probably had the better writing. It's close between those 2.

Season One. You can eliminate the rest of the series and still have ninety percent of what made it great - you lose about four first-rate shows at most.

I agree completely. There are a bunch of episodes I haven't seen still, but I've seen enough to say with confidence that most of my favourite episodes and most of the ones that I'd consider the best of the series took place in season one. It's amazingly consistent compared to other Star Trek series. That one season is better than seasons of some of the other ones combined.

As for season 2, it has only three episodes I think of as bonafide classics - "Mirror, Mirror", "Journey to Babel", and "The Trouble with Tribbles". I like a handful of episodes in season 3, but not enough that I'd really mind if that entire season was wiped from existence. The minor highlights of that season are not even close to balancing out the absolute atrociousness of its worst episodes.

Season 1 definitely wins for the best writing (e.g. "City on the Edge of Forever," "Balance of Terror," "Devil in the Dark," "The Menagerie".) Although the character development reaches its stride in Season 2 (e.g. "Amok Time," "Journey to Babel," "Obsession," "The Ultimate Computer".)

^ My thoughts exactly for why I like the first two seasons best for different reasons.

Roddenberry also tried to do this in yr 1, and if he had been successful, I think the series would have been dead before yr 2, regardless of how many color TV sets got sold. Freiberger not only didn't 'get' TREK, he didn't have the POV that Coon brought.

I blame Rick Berman for all the bad episodes of TOS.

In a few years, I'll probably blame JJ Abrams.

:shifty:

I love all three: each season had it's howlers but, equally, each one had some real gems...

Second Season has always been the best to me. It has many of my favorite eps. However, Season One is a photo finish. Of course, as many think, Season Three is the weakest, but even it had some fabulous eps.

I am shocked (and pleased) that season one is preferred.

I have always thought the combination of the first half of season one's emphasis on the crew and life aboard and the second half of season one's superior written stories make it hands down best.

Season two's first half is very, very good and has many classic episodes, but doesn't have the charm, atmosphere and intangible sense of mystery that season one does.

It was slowly becoming a 'space navy' show instead of a journey through the mysterious unknown.

The entire series is great. 79 gems of varying luster...but season 2 is where they hit their mojo in many ways.

Season three was still very good although a tad weak at times.

Too bad Kirk didn't don his green wrap-around that year. He would have done better with some of the women had he worn it. :techman:

There was a time I might have said Season 2, for the better established characters and background, but then I remember space Nazis, space Romans, space gangsters (OK, that one was fun), all excuses to raid Paramount's prop and costume collection. I have to give the title to Season 1.

Season one, for sure. I love all of Star Trek's three seasons for different reasons, but quality-wise the first season is the most coherent.
