What really happened to Star Trek

I haven't listened to it. Can anyone give me the cliff notes version? On second thought, scratch that, don't bother.

Incrementalism is amusing, because eventually we'll see Kirk torture and beat people to death like in the serie "24" and people here will be saying "so what? he's imperfect, like DS9!".

ST:11 is an incredible milestone in turning trekkers into neo-cons.

It's true about DS9. What we're seeing here is not simply imperfect people but a somewhat incremental leaning toward a dystopia. As said in the video, when things got bad with Enterprise, instead of coming back they jumped all the way to the other side.

Incrementalism is the frog analogy. If you boil a frog too quickly, it jumps out... but if you slowly raise the temperature, the frog will boil to death without ever moving out.

A ridiculous level of Utopianism in Trek won't sell tickets at the box office. We need a franchise that people can at the very least relate to in todays society and we need something that's exciting to watch and not some boring drivel, we're not in the 1960's anymore, we're in the 21st century and it's time you joined us.

Exactly. We're in the 21st century where the US openly admits that they torture, and where they invade other countries, and so that's indeed the mentality behind this new movie: targetting the new youth that are more neo-con and passive-agressive and thereby creating the new generation of trekkers: the neo-con.

And what to do with the "trek purists that live in the 60s with their utopias"? Nothing - the movie is called Star Trek, the guy is called James T. Kirk, there's a ship called Enterprise... they'll go along with it.

Deviously genius.

Argumentum ad populum doesn't work well on me. I never forged my opinions based on peer pressure.

No, you forge your opinions based on what Alex Jones says. Ive often noticed that conspiracy theorists have an almost religious fervour about them, whereby anyone who disagrees with them is clearly not privy to the 'secret truth' and thus is either a sheep or part of the conspiracy. When they get told their rants lack both insight and understanding they attribute it as an attempt to silence them to prevent the secret truth about the conspiracy from being revealed.

It all comes across as very cult like to me, where everything from outbreaks of disease to sci-fi movies are attributed as being part of the conspiracy. Its like when Charles Manson kept seeing evidence everywhere that the Beatles were communicating with him through their music, he saw the evidence in everything from t.v broadcasts to his friends names and cereal boxes.

P.s i dont know whether you noticed but Kirk attempts to save Nero at the end of the film and was willing to help him and save his life. If they'd turned Kirk into a neocon then he would have tordpedoe'd Nero's a.ss without even bargaining with him whilst screaming 'f*ck yeah* before firing his hand phaser randomly into the air accidentally killing Sulu.

Oh yeah, O remember DS9. The other Star trek series that didn't take place in Fantasyland.

It is amazing to me that killing a genocidal maniac in battle now makes one "a neocon."

In case you haven't been keeping up with current events, the United States is wrestling very seriously and painfully with the revelations of torture. As to the youth who are all passive-agressive neo-cons... really? Are those the youth who voted for the other guy in record numbers? Who turned against the very philosophy you claim they represent? Little quick for revisionist history, isn't it?

Better stop, before this gets moved to TNZ.

Maybe for the next movie Kirk could torture people to death. And then, we could criticize people for making "the worst threads ever" for denouncing it. After all, it will be action-packed and the special effects will be great! 95% love on rottentomatoes! And dissent will only be about how the Enterprise will be designed.

I've read Gep's thread and does articulate well that he felt a malaise. But the video i posted actually puts the finger on where the malaise comes from.

Not at all. It's really as bad as folks have said.

You have an absolute right to the opinion, and some of us will even listen to it all the way through. You don't have a right to have people call it smart when it's not, and belittling them when they call it like they see it doesn't elevate you at all.

If the feeling of being a beleaguered voice of reason in a wilderness of philistines fortifies your ego, though, I suppose this thread is its own reward. :)

I especially like it when he makes a "Grrr-rrrrr!" noise. Because that 's the noise you make when you're mocking jocks, Bushies, Obamites, and the millions upon millions of people who are too dumb to realize that your farts smell like candy.
The Neo-cons. Yes. Oh, you'll see. You think it's all funny now, but wait till STXII: The Search for Jesus, and STXIII: What would Jesus Do With a Starship?

Actually, the current trend in movies is to make everything as dark as possible (see: The Dark Knight). Star Trek has been the most optimistic and uplifting movie in quite some time.

Obama, who sent 15,000 more troops overseas upen taking office when people were against the wars? Or Obama pardoning Bush's tortures and allowing them to continue for when the neo-cons come back? You need to watch the movie: The Obama Deception. It's on youtube.

Obama betrayed anti-war people like ST:11 betrayed you the same. It's a neo-con movie that betrays the left wingers just like what is currently happening in society. And people refuse to see it because of their ego, because your ego is what makes you invest yourself in something (Obama, ST:11, etc.) and refuses to admit that it's wrong and makes you persist in error.

Wrong forum. No politics here, please -- we're discussing the movie and have no use for trolls. Links removed (thanks, all, for quoting it several times.) Thread closed.
