What Marvel films are worth seeing?

I do like ‘cinephile’ movies but that is certainly not my expectation when watching comic book movies.

Yes, they follow a formula, like all action films. But some follow it in a clever way, and others do not.

I want to put my brain in passive mode, but not turn it off completely, if that makes sense.

I want ‘The smart kind of dumb’.

Thus far the only ones I've liked have been Iron Man 1 / 3, The Incredible Hulk, most of Guardians 1, most of Cap 1, some of Cap 2, most of Ragnarok and ... that's about it.

Haven't seen Black Panther or Infinity War yet, though.

I like Captain America's movies best, especially Winter Soldier, but I feel all of them are really worth watching, because all sort of have something different to see. I thought Thor Ragnarok was so incredibly fun to watch and just hilarious without being too silly, and Black Panther was very unique and interesting. I feel my least favorites are Iron Man, but that's probably I just find Tony Stark sort of boring and annoying, he's my least favorite Avenger.

Sounds like Captain Americas are the strongest recommendation here, I'll check those out first. Also I have heard other people rave about the second GoG. If I get into those it might inspire me to circle out further.

Forgot about X Men because I was mostly focusing on movies that are part of the narrative weaved together by Infinite War, I have seen the first two of those. Thought they were decent. Might check out First Class and Logan.

I've heard other good things about Howard the Duck. Might try to see that, but not as part of this push which is more "Getting a more complete view of this tightly woven universe".

If you see X-Men: First Class, then I would recommend following up with the sequel Days of Future Past. It's one of my favorite superhero movies of all time.

What Marvel films are worth seeing?

Start with the Captain America films; the are the crown jewels of the MCU, as the adaptation of the character is as close / pitch perfect of as you're likely to see in the MCU and among the best in cinema history. Like the source, he faces fantasy elements, but the edge of government(s) influences, dark operators and politics forcefully and effectively shape the films to be thrilling and mature. That's why they have a rare, high re-watch value among superhero adaptations (although Civil War has some "fat" that could have been trimmed).

Aside from the movies, I'd also recommend the Netflix shows, which all have very strong writing, very strong characters, and feel very relevant. Except for Iron Fist and the Defenders crossover. Those were just meh.

Yes--the Netflix series are also strong--very interesting, serious and gives a look at how grit applies to Marvel characters. Probably the best Marvel productions outside of the Captain America films.

The Winter Soldier had a great fight scene in an elevator. Civil War had the Superhero on Superhero fight scene and Captain/Bucky fight with Iron Man. They are among the best fight scenes in MCU.

My favorite fight sequences from CA:TWS
- Opening 'stealth' incursion of Cap onto the captured SHIELD ship (With him and Black Widow taking out the terrorists).
- Cap VS the Shield Agents in the Elevator.
- Cap taking out the Quinjet.
- Cap and Co. (starting on the Overpass) in the city fighting the Winter Soldier and lackeys.

On topic: I’m a big comic book fan, especially (though not exclusively) of superhero comics. While I prefer the DC films over the Marvel ones as a group (but not interested in a long drawn out argument or debate), I still like the Marvel MCU movies enough to have purchased all of them.

Basic summer blockbuster schlock indistinguishable from Transformers or Harry Potter to me.
