So what makes a good trek fan ?
I have a friend who calls himself a better fan than me. He ask,s me questions on TNG VOY ENT DS9 and when i can,t remember or forget he mocks my so called vulcan intelligence ( No pun intended )
But when i ask him the names of the episodes he questions me on he can,t tell me and gives me a poor excuse. He tells me that TOS is rubbish and has never seen ST 2 TWOK all any of the TOS films . We are both the same age and have some great memory,s of Trek from all aspects of the franchise ,but to him i,m always the underdog .
So it got me thinking what makes a good trek fan ?
Feedback my fellow trek troi councilers. ? NS
When someone decides to try and out show themselves as somehow being a bigger fan of something more then others, one has to question their rationality.
You are either a fan of something or you are not.... you either like something or you don't..... you either despise something..... or you're an obsessed fanatic. (Which is different from a general "Fan")
Obviously you both are fans of the series to a limited degree over different things. I say limited because literally speaking, if one is not a fan of all things star trek, then they are limited in being a fan. That's not a bad thing, as there are things I am not too keen on.
We each like/love Star Trek for our own reasons.... just because you like things that he doesn't or just because you remember/know things he doesn't remember (or vice versa) doesn't equate to one or the other of you being less of a fan then the other.
To use a Star Trek-style analogy to relate what I am saying, it is like a painter telling a musician he's not an artists simply because he or she doesn't create art the exact same way as they do.
You can not compare one's interests in something to another's because it's completely subjective to the individual.
To even argue the point that he is more of a fan then you is kind of ridiculous because last I checked, it's not a competition.
To put it another way, this is Star Trek, not crappy-ass Star Wars where you go around trying to watch the movies more then anybody else to rub in their faces... besides, nobody really gives a damn how much of a fan you are except yourself.... certainly not the regular joe down the street who never got into Star Trek gives a damn and 95% of actual Star Trek fans don't really care either.
I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek TOS/Movies, nor am I big fan of Enterprise. I appreciate both of them and each have their good episodes.... and I also still have to give both a fair chance ala watching them through.... I started on TNG, then DS9 and actually I still haven't seen the final season of Voyager.
Yet I still have a pile of crap relating to Star Trek, such as uniforms signed by Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn, STTNG Technical Manual, ST Encyclopedia, The Art of Star Trek, an official blue print of the 1701-A, a complete TNG collector card collection which are all un-cut as their original printed sheets straight off the printers (Never circulated) and a pile of other crap.
Now one would possibly think that I was a huge fan who went out and collected all of this stuff on my own..... and they would be wrong. I'd consider myself a huge fan, yes.... however, I never went out and got these things for myself, instead they were all given to me as gifts over the years because others thought I was a huge fan and appreciate them.
I certainly do appreciate them, but I could have lived without them and wouldn't have an issue selling it all for a reasonable profit as Quark would say.
