What Makes A Good Trek Fan ?

So what makes a good trek fan ?

I have a friend who calls himself a better fan than me. He ask,s me questions on TNG VOY ENT DS9 and when i can,t remember or forget he mocks my so called vulcan intelligence ( No pun intended )

But when i ask him the names of the episodes he questions me on he can,t tell me and gives me a poor excuse. He tells me that TOS is rubbish and has never seen ST 2 TWOK all any of the TOS films . We are both the same age and have some great memory,s of Trek from all aspects of the franchise ,but to him i,m always the underdog .

So it got me thinking what makes a good trek fan ?

Feedback my fellow trek troi councilers. ? NS :vulcan:

He's a second-generation fan. Nothing good or bad about it, that's just what it is. They don't like the '60 series, the '80s movies, and the 2009 reboot isn't their Star Trek even if they liked it.

Most people I know who are my age (early-30s) fall into this category. They mainly watched TNG, might be curious about DS9 or VOY, and probably only like TOS through the movies or maybe just the 2009 one.

The problem I see with your friend is that he seems to have a competitive attitude when it comes to Trek. He's trying to beat you. I see that as being a bad fan. Whatever Trek one likes or doesn't is ok. That's up to personal taste, as is how much trivia one wants to memorize. For example, I love DS9. I can't name hardly any episode titles, or identify plots from the titles I hear. Memorizing it just isn't my thing. I never liked the idea of sentient holograms, but I still consider myself a fan of Voyager.
I don't like fandom being a method of segregating people. That, to me makes one a bad fan. That's how I see it, anyway.
Fandom should be used to unify us.

I agree. What's the point in saying someone's a "bad" Trek fan for not liking what you like or enjoying it in the same ways?

I mean, as far as taste, I'd probably side with your friend since I do much prefer the 24th-century stuff and WISH I hadn't seen TWOK, but I'm not more of a "good fan" than a TOS fan. It's a ridiculous notion.

I'd guess it all depends on your perspective. From the POV of the people who've made the show, a good fan is one who watches and buys stuff related to the show.

I don't think memorizing trivia makes you a better fan. And busting someone's stones because they know less about a Star Trek spinoff than they do is pretty sad. Is he really being serious?

For me, the answer's pretty simple.

Like any kind of fan, the Trek Fan is simply one who posseses a certain passion for any and/or all aspects of Trek. There could be TOS-only fans, or TNG fans, or TNG-era fans--but passion, enthusiasm, is the key, the litmus test, above all else.

Just my $0.02. :)

Well I've been watching ST since it first aired in the UK in the sixties (in black and white). I have all the episodes of every series and every film on DVD and I watch them every day. (Not all of them just two or three episodes ) I like all the series and my favourite is usually the one I am watch at the moment. I am just coming to the end of Enterprise and will then watch TOS again. I am not sure whether I could win on Mastermind but I think I qualify as a Good Trek Fan.

Well, bad Trek fans are the ones who are rude and disrespectful to other fans. The good fans are the rest.

Ask him if he believes in the Vulcan "IDIC - Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations" philosophy. If he says yes, then tell him he's not a true fan because he's always trying to put you down.

Trek, at its core, is about tolerance, respect and broadening our knowledge of others and their way of life. It's about understanding someone else's way of thinking even if you don't agree with it.

His attitude seems to be more Borg-like - take down anything that doesn't conform to his individual standards.

See what he says when confronted with that.

IMO a good Trek fan is one who is honestly critical of the flaws of any given Trek product, and also does not accept bad Trek products just because they have the Trek label slapped onto them.

When someone decides to try and out show themselves as somehow being a bigger fan of something more then others, one has to question their rationality.

You are either a fan of something or you are not.... you either like something or you don't..... you either despise something..... or you're an obsessed fanatic. (Which is different from a general "Fan")

Obviously you both are fans of the series to a limited degree over different things. I say limited because literally speaking, if one is not a fan of all things star trek, then they are limited in being a fan. That's not a bad thing, as there are things I am not too keen on.

We each like/love Star Trek for our own reasons.... just because you like things that he doesn't or just because you remember/know things he doesn't remember (or vice versa) doesn't equate to one or the other of you being less of a fan then the other.

To use a Star Trek-style analogy to relate what I am saying, it is like a painter telling a musician he's not an artists simply because he or she doesn't create art the exact same way as they do.

You can not compare one's interests in something to another's because it's completely subjective to the individual.

To even argue the point that he is more of a fan then you is kind of ridiculous because last I checked, it's not a competition.

To put it another way, this is Star Trek, not crappy-ass Star Wars where you go around trying to watch the movies more then anybody else to rub in their faces... besides, nobody really gives a damn how much of a fan you are except yourself.... certainly not the regular joe down the street who never got into Star Trek gives a damn and 95% of actual Star Trek fans don't really care either.

I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek TOS/Movies, nor am I big fan of Enterprise. I appreciate both of them and each have their good episodes.... and I also still have to give both a fair chance ala watching them through.... I started on TNG, then DS9 and actually I still haven't seen the final season of Voyager.

Yet I still have a pile of crap relating to Star Trek, such as uniforms signed by Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn, STTNG Technical Manual, ST Encyclopedia, The Art of Star Trek, an official blue print of the 1701-A, a complete TNG collector card collection which are all un-cut as their original printed sheets straight off the printers (Never circulated) and a pile of other crap.

Now one would possibly think that I was a huge fan who went out and collected all of this stuff on my own..... and they would be wrong. I'd consider myself a huge fan, yes.... however, I never went out and got these things for myself, instead they were all given to me as gifts over the years because others thought I was a huge fan and appreciate them.

I certainly do appreciate them, but I could have lived without them and wouldn't have an issue selling it all for a reasonable profit as Quark would say.

I'd say going around telling people they are a better trek fan is a sign of a bad fan, especially one who needs a life. Everybody approaches their interests differently whether it's Trek or sculpting.

I didn't know it was a contest.

Yes your right nerys myk i should not be so competitive with my friend .
And it should not be a contest.

I,ve realised that you can,t have a bad fan or good fan following trek. We will as individuals always have feelings and opinions that we will agree and disagree in .

Like Rush Limborg quotes above passion and enthusiasm is the key and i,m proud and happy i have come to love Star Trek .:techman:

Your friend sounds extremely lame and immature. Tell him to get over himself.

A good Trek fan remembers that all of this is supposed to be fun, and doesn't take it or themselves too seriously.
