What is the age of the Enterprise (NCC-1701)?

2273, which lines up nicely with the series and the line from Kirk serving 2.5 years behind a desk that I mentioned posts ago, which would have been after his promotion and the slow dismissal of the crew after 2270's return to Earth.

Why does that point to 2273? If he commanded another five-year mission it might as well be 2278.

Thing is, in either case there's going to be long period of time we don't hear about, be it before or after TMP. If it is before, then it is easy to assume that Kirk commanded the Enterprise, if it is after, that becomes much more difficult assumption, as admirals don't tend to command ships in Trek (except temporarily.)

Icheb specifically gives the date in Voyager that TMP happens, but ignore that if you must.

What does he say?

No, he doesn't. He gives a date for the end of the five-year mission, but that's all.

ICHEB: Though it was a blatant violation of the Prime Directive, Kirk saved the Pelosians from extinction, just as he had the Baezians and the Chenari many years earlier. Finally, in the year 2270, Kirk completed his historic five year mission and one of the greatest chapters in Starfleet history came to a close. A new chapter began when Kirk regained command of the Enterprise.
JANEWAY: How many more chapters are there?
ICHEB: Thirty four.
JANEWAY: This was supposed to be a twenty minute presentation.
ICHEB: I was trying to be thorough. I could shorten the report.
JANEWAY: That won't be necessary. You obviously know the subject matter. Congratulations, Cadet. You have just passed Early Starfleet History.
ICHEB: Thank you, Captain.

I personally think TMP does work better set ten years after TOS. The only justification I've read for why people think that wouldn't work is that in TMP, Kirk references his "five years out there", which seems to imply he only commanded one five-year mission.

Commodore Decker is an Admiral (lower Rear Admiral by TNG standards) and commands the Constellation.

*fucking headdesk*

After the 5 year mission, Kirk is promoted and given a desk job which he eventually occupies for 2 and a half years, made pretty FUCKING CLEAR in TMP has him aching to be on a ship again after that little time because he's going stir crazy not being in space. The Enterprise was anchored and the given an 18 month refit which could even have meant to be 2 years given the lines from Scotty, having to shove her out early because the rest of the fleet was playing chicken shit again.

It's 2273 because every single publication from the 1970's until now says so, it's established in dialogue, it's made clear enough in the film without using a board and crayons and the stardate is given in subtitles that if you use the TOS system equal a date in pretty early 2273.

We really need an actor paid just to stand and give a 5 hour introduction to every episode and film just to stop people missing this shit.

Temporally?

Well, that's actually a good point. Shit.

Commodore is not an Admiral, more like senior Captain. That the rank later got replaced with an Admiral rank doesn't change that. If we believe the background material the rank of Commodore existed during TMP. Kirk was a Rear Admiral (no halves.)
Temporally?
Temporarily.

Captains can command a floatilla (without being Fleet Captain, which is a step higher), Commodore's command aircraft carriers within the Royal Navy and presumably other navies, along with having tactical command of the taskforce that accompanies it.

Admiral level ranks are the first ones that absolutely require the officer to fall back to a shore based command altogether. The responsibilities of the Admiralty are different for most nations.

One of many but yeah.
Well, it is the only thing that establishes that there wasn't a second five-year mission.

All this just establishes that the film happens about three years after their last mission, but had there been another five-year mission, it could have been in 2275, the film taking place in 2278.

But fine. Kirk's statement that there was only on five-year mission is clear enough. So what did the Enterprise do between those twelve years between TMP and TWOK?

A large number of comics and books have been written/drawn between then and now to explain it all. But in universe they stopped existing like all fiction, so nothing.

Kirk leaves Starfleet at one point, returning to his farm in Iowa and meeting a woman called Antonia who loves eggs. Eventually he decides to break her heart and return to Starfleet in around 2284 I think. I worked out why years ago but don't have my reasoning to hand. Wait, it was because it was "nine years ago" from his point of view.
