Spoilers What is a dealbreaker for me so far - Technology question

Hi,

so, briefly, I disregard new ST movies, as I like original time line way more and I adore 90's ST series and take them as a true ST for me.

As for STD, I wasnt hoping for much, but I had faith.
I can get pass klingon's looks, 2000 km space suit flight, mediocre fan service (Picard-like captain, ...), people not behaving so noble.
But in second episode of STD, battle occured and there was the dealbreaker for me... no phaser beams. Iconic sound and weapon of ST for me, but all I'm seeing are pew pew blasters like I'm watching Star wars instead.
Then I've cooled off, and started looking for some answers and ended up here.
So... I realise Shenzhou is old ship, but there were others even seemingly Miranda class USS Europa, yet ... they were all firing those pesky blasters ... so is that like not a thing in that time yet (tech-wise)?

In my eyes so far, STD is a good sci-fi show but lousy Star Trek.

PS: whats the BB code for spoilers here?
doesnt work.

I fell at the hurdle of the Klingon looks and the (yawn) religious crusade they're on.

When it comes to the tech aspect, it all just looks wrong in my eyes--especially for a series set 10 years prior to TOS.

Wrath of Khan had the pewpew phasers in 1982. The difference here and in the Kelvin movies is that we're seeing all banks firing at once (which is how it would be done realistically) instead of one or two at a time.

Firing all banks doesnt make them look like blasters or cannons, it should still be a beam of energy from multiple banks/arrays ...

It's a reimagintion. I'm sure many other changes will be apparent as more episodes air. I don't mind that they reimagined it, I just don't like the changes. I didn't like the Klingon ships, uniforms or physical appearance. A lot of the Fed ships I wasn't thrilled with. The Fed uniforms, except for the basic color, are silly looking. Yeah, the phaser FX are like Star Wars and Abramsverse, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I don't mind a messianic, religious warrior-prophet Klingon leader, or a flawed, damaged, reckless and unprofessional disgraced Starfleet officer as a lead in principle, though the mutiny seemed absurd and implausible w/o knowing more. But the dealbreaker was it just not looking or feeling like Star Trek to me. The tech changes are part of that, but that's more of a dealbreaker of it being Prime universe, not of it being Trek.

You want phasers firing out of the forward torpedo tube? Canon violation!! ;)

Yeah, 'bolt' phasers are nothing new in Star Trek, we've seen them in TWOK, DS9 (the Defiant), and throughout the JJ movies. Beam weapons are just a bit passé. They don't make much sense either in the way that Trek uses them, as single point of impact weapons - if you had a beam weapon, you'd turn it on and arc it back and forth across a surface. Plus they give away your position like crazy, when it comes to hand weapons.

That was a first pic that came up.
And they made good sense against shields, it's a concentrated beam of energy. Then torpedos for hull damage of course.
Continuity is what matters to me.- Of course it's tricky with prequels, but still ... if nothing else I was suprised and not in a good way.

If Orville can be more ST than actual ST, then ...

In that instance, I think the photon torpedo came out of the torpedo tube and the phaser came from the left pylon.

There was at least one actual instance where the phaser came from the torp tube though.

Let's face it, the solid beams of TOS were probably the only way they could do it with 60's FX. TNG and later series' just didn't change it up too often.

I'd be pissed if they showed something that's clearly TNG-era tech, like corporeal, intelligent holograms/holodecks, or Federation androids like Data. Or only later-known things like the Borg, or Romulan cloaking technology.

I was a bit annoyed at the klingon cloaking decive. But then again, this one was simply "invisibility", still touching stuff, instead of the "out of phase"-technology of TNG in, say, the Pegasus. Also, the almost-landing of the Shenzhou was a bit iffy, regarding Voyager. But it looked cool.

With old treknology looking different (aka phaser bolts instead of beams, and starships having more details and stuff) I have no problems. Visual reboot and all of that.

Not to me in the slightest, especially not with something as minor as that. But even if it does to you, as several people have said, watch TWOK. The phasers fire bolts in that movie, too.

Don't forget that throughout the first season of TOS, the phasers were bolts as well. So that means the DSC phasers are more canon, not less!

The main reason I like beam phasers is that they can be used for things other than as weapons. I like it when they use phasers to cut through walls or heat rocks. I don't see them doing that so much with bolt phasers.

Perhaps that is one of the settings on the Disc. phaser... it does have multiple settings and output emitters.
