What in Gods name did Harry Kim do in Voyager?

I liked his character. He was an ensign on a small unimportant ship. What do people expect, a boy genius who solves all Voyager problems? His portrayal is realistic, he just stands there and follows orders, decisions are made by senior officers.

Believe me, I didn't want another S1 Wes. But lots of things that SHOULD have changed Harry in one way or another just....didn't. Not even capability-wise, but things that would make most people more jaded or cautious, or just...make them develop in SOME way. But he never did. The frustrations about Kim are far less about what he's capable of doing and more about the fact that he never develops as a character, at least for me. Closest we ever got was the future Harry in Timeless.

Yeah little development toward the end of 7 years of service would have been nice, but we have to accept that even in 24th century, there are humans who are of average capability.

I think in Star Trek Insurrection, we see one of the bridge officers with gray hair, probably a lieutenant who never progressed.

Older women are better but younger women don't even understand how forgiving and tolerant they are, however ugly women try harder, I mean a man is amazed when a truely beautiful women agrees to sleep with him that she can just lay their like a sack of sweet potatoes and it's still a huge victory for him, but ugly girls, they really really have to go to town to be memorable.

But here's the worst gem, women talk to each other about everything. So if you're trapped in a tin can with 70ish women, good or bad you're going to pick up a reputation quick for being good at stuff or bad at stuff that as a commodity on the dating circuit the market will dictate your value...

So when Tom and Harry came as a pair, Harry's price was artificially inflated by Toms charm and hotness, so honestly you can bet that one person from any pairing of women, bait and switch, who drew the short straw gambling they'd get some Tom, when they wound up with Harry would mostly be finding herself with cramps or a head ache while Kim is suggesting a night cap.

After Tom got married, who was Harry's new wing man?

Neelix?

Harry inflated Neelix's value?

But it was proved in Seinfeld that if you have been with a beautiful woman already, that the door is open, and the beautiful people will still be welcoming to you... So all the females on voyager must have assumed that what ever Kes saw in him that was endearing might also be of some compatible value to them.

So, even Neelix inflates Harrys value as a playboy?

 :shifty:

OK... I am guessing you're a bit on the younger side yourself? (or you just like 'em younger... :p )
I'm 23, and while there are many, many hot women over the age of 25, they don't all automatically qualify into the "suitable" category. ;)

Ah, all right... But I would never think of limiting myself in principle to men more than 2 years out of my age range. That's just... well, way too limiting. :cardie: I've been attracted to men over 20 years older than me - true, they're actors, not anyone I've met in real life, but still. (Or over 30 years older  if you count their actual age now, rather than how old they were when they were when they played the role. )

I'm not limiting myself, it's not like as if I'm going to ask them for their ID to prove that they're under 25. I was just making a jape.

He was holding up the Ops station that was damaged when Voyager was brought into the Delta quadrant. He kept calling for a repair team but they were to busy elsewhere.

Neelix had none so whatever he did, he would be a success whereas Kim had a lot more potential but never fulfilled it, in part because of Janeway and in part for allowing himself to be bullied by her.

Janeway liked Kim just fine. In fact, she told him in "The Cloud" that his performance had exceeded her expectations. However, the writers found characters like Seven and the Doctor easier to write for so the rest got shunted aside.

But even humans of average ability grow up. Maturity-wise Harry seemed almost exactly the same in year 7 as he did in year 1. That isn't average - that's below average.

Exactly. Just like I said in my last post, my beefs with Harry aren't what he's capable of doing, it's that he doesn't develop or grow. The hologram designed for emergencies develops more than Harry (the doctor is easily my favorite character on VOY, but when you think about it, it's kind of funny. I think it is, anyway).

"You exceeded my expectations Mr Kim" Of course they were so phenominally low all he had to do was continue breathing for seven years (and sometimes he even failed at that)

Or

He died waaaay more times than she expected him to.

They told him to shut up in UNimatrix Zero when Tom got promoted and he wanted some promotion, young janeways laughed when Old Chuckles said that Kim was the valuable resourceful bloke he made astrometrics, and Janeway laughed at Kim when he postulated that he would already be a lieutenant commander after 7 years in the fleet, hell she even laughed at him because of his first assessment that he should even be a lieutenant junior grade already after 7 years.

Almost 30 crew left or died (on screen.) during the course of the show. There was huge room for advancement on that ship, especially if Janeway had been more proactive about new crew and mercenaries.

^ My point was the neglect of Harry was more the function of the writers than any personal vendetta of Janeway's. Janeway can't have a personal vendetta anyway - she's fictional. ;)

^ She can have one written for her...or the way that Mulgrew plays her could imply a personal vendetta...
