Really there was no need to do that, they were trying to disable the ship not destroy it outright.
Had they done that, most of the crew would have died. *shrug* aside from casting a dark tone it really wouldn't have done much... Janeway wouldn't have used the enhanced engines because they required slaughtering a lifeform.
