What if the Master's next regeneration...

Is the form of a classic Doctor? It seems like such a Master thing to do. Mock the Doctor by taking his form. Imagine the Master setting his TARDIS to look like a blue box and then sauntering off to perform all sorts of heinous deeds, all while bearing the face of the Doctor.

They could do it using a current Doctor, playing for two, just like when Smith played that Cyberman thing. They could also use it as a way to bring back an actor who played a previous incarnation. Imagine the Doctor having to chase down a maniacal Davidson, McCoy or Tennant (IMHO those being the actors most likely to go for something like this).

A version of The Maste played by Tennant would be great. He could even use his natural scottish accent as The Master instead of the accent he used as The Doctor to help differentiate the roles. He can definitely play a menacing villain. I doubt they'd ever do this, they'd probably say its too "confusing" for casual viewers, but it would be interesting.

If he did that, the Doctor would throw out the rulebook and go all-out to kill him. He wouldn't want to, but the damage to both the universe and his reputation would leave him no choice. Being a total unknown is one thing; being the most hated person in the cosmos is quite another.

Or perhaps chose one of the older Doctors and The Master deliberately takes an aged version of that Doctor, which would explain away why the actor is so much older. Of course, the biggest problem is whether Tom, Peter, Colin, or Sylvester (or even Paul) would be interested in such a role done at a higher octane than their day.

You know what, I wouldn't mind seeing this idea inverted, either. Like the Doctor deciding that he wants to "redeem" the master. He turns into Simm or possibly Jacobi and then resolves to go about doing good deeds. Maybe after he up and really, really kills the Master.

For some reason I really hate the idea, unless it was just for one episode. I don't know why...maybe I'd somewhat feel it's a waste having he actor right there but not their Doctor back? Just some weird rationale perhaps.

I'd be simultaneously infuriated and delighted to have Paul McCann return to the series as a regenerated Master.

Yeah, not like an every episode thing. It would require very little actor commitment. Maybe a couple three eps in a series?

I'd have though John Hurt would have been the best candidate to haunt the Doctor with, him being the War Doctor and all that, but sadly that won't be happening (I can also imagine Hurt as a Master more than I can other Doctors).

Alternatively, market an episode as a multi-doctor one and have Tennant or Smith turn out to be the Master half way through the episode, masquerading as the Doctor in an elaborate trap. Either as a regeneration or maybe just as a high-tech disguise instead. But don't make a Master using the same actor as a former Doctor a regular feature, it'd be confusing to casual viewers for a start and would just feel wrong.

And its interesting, cause it really is the case for the whole of Who - Delgado for Letts/Dicks, Ainley for JNT, Simm for Davies and Gomez for Moffat. It'd have been nice to see Gomez survive Moffat, for a change.

Never really noticed the Master/show runner thing before, but it's an interesting point. And I think I'd like to see Gomez continue too, especially in the event that the next Doctor (or the next-but-one) is female.

Anyway, a former Doctor as the Master? There's only one actor mad enough.

The return of Simm kinda throws a wrench into that theory.
Though I am pretty sure it will be a one-off.
Let's see if Chibnall casts a new master as well.

The original Master, Roger Delgado, died in a motorcycle accident, if I remember correctly. If that never happened, he may very well have played The Master through the entire original series run. He was quite good...

Nah, if they get an actor who played a past Doctor to return, I want to see them back as their Doctor, not the Master.

Normally I would agree, but have you seen Jessica Jones? David Tennant can be positively terrifying if he wants to.

I don't disagree at all, I just haven't seen Smith play that sort of scenery-chewing villain yet and I would very much like to.
