What if our universe were a simulation?

It depends on how we feel about AI or simulated entities. I'd imagine that some would no more care about a simulated universe than they would about an app on their phone.

I would care.....

Especially if one of those beings called out directly to me. I'd feel somewhat obliged to help it.

There's nothing you could do, their biggest problem is knowing they're a simulation and that you exist. Anything else is just life.

Not actually a physical object but pathways. I meant that decisions we make create other paths or universes if you subscribe to the multiverse theory.

Yes? That's what I'm talking about, did you think I meant actual trees?

Go out and make the decisions you want to maximize your chances to put your life on pathways you want. You mention snogging, start NOW!

I snogged last night. No need to snog again :)

Hmmm that's a point.......But if you can communicate to them you could tell them how to hack their world couldn't you? Assuming you had access to the code.

If the universe is a simulation, I hope we get the Space Opera upgrade soon.

Haha reminds me of the movie The 13th Floor..... Watching that right now actually.

I prefer the fun of hypothesizing in the Multiverse theory. For example, there is a universe where I am having sex with everyone I ever wanted to have sex with right now in a massive, gratifying orgy.
Logic dictates that if that universe exists, there is also a universe where you are underequipped and everyone knows it.....

CCC.

I like that. Minus the slaying of course.

What's wrong with a little slaying? It's great exercise and helps keep the population in check. It's win freakin' win baby.

If this is a simulation, I say it's time to hit the reset button, but that's an Earth-centric view I know.

If they are programmed to act like they feel and put on the appearance of struggling to make their own decisions, it's not feeling or making their own decisions.

It's not hard to write a play where the characters freak out because they can see the audience and beg for their freedom... Hey! That sorta happened on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Last week. :)

One of the back up dancers in the new opening credits, asks the Crazy Ex Girlfriend "When is this going to air" or "How do I describe this gig on my resume?" and then the crazy Exgirlfriend explains "Oh, this is not real. You're not real, I invented you as a day dream to work through some minor psychological issues" and then the Crazy Ex Girlfriend uses her heat vision to explode the back up dancer figment asking too many impertinent questions, so that everyone else in her head, gets with the program.

:)

It's funny how being a woman makes someone attempting to insult your penis-size fall flat. ;)
So why have some scientists hopped on board with this theory?

Because it's an interesting possibility to entertain? The logic itself is fallacious, but there's no evidence that it is not so, and no reason for it not to be so, there is just no logical justification for it to be so. Five or ten years ago I read an article in the Times, of all places, about this theory that went so far as to conclude that not only were we a simulation, but we were an entertainment simulation (rather than scientific/observational), and so basically video game characters. The article amounted to a survival guide about the importance of making your character interesting so you wouldn't get killed off. It was utterly ridiculous, especially being presented under the guise of "science", but it was still fun to read.
