Do we know that? He knew David existed before he met him as an adult. "I did what you wanted. I stayed away. Why didn't you tell him?"
If you are interested, "The Autobiography of James T. Kirk" by David A. Goodman deals with the father/son theme, the absence and the guilt in a few very nice scenes, including one between Kirk and McCoy on board the Hotspur when David was still a toddler.Do we know that?
