What if?; Hinchcliffe had of stayed on..

I don't think it was so much drinking (hell isn't have a couple of pints in the evening a national passtime in the UK?) as the fact he has a Shatner sized ego and some might say hes downright crazy.

apparently we're the biggest drinkers in the world...which I don't quite believe if I'm honest

I do get the feeling many Brits would be considered alcoholics in the States. I recall Alistair Campbell (Tony Blair's spin doctor) once saying that he and Dubya compared alcoholic war stories once as they'd both had issues...apparently Campbell was a little underwhelmed at how little Bush had drunk!)

Tom isn't *actually* as crazy as he appears to be, but plays it for effect because he knows he has that reputation. And drunk Docs aren't unusual - watch The Invasion DVD to see Pat and Frazer pissed as newts on location at what's supposed to be Tobias Vaughn's factory but is actually the biggest Guinness brewery in England... Watch The Sea Devils and see Roger Delgado totallly paralytic on the briny...

And none of it matters, cos they're all still great!

He just wanted the Doctor to have no companion at all, so was probably taking it out on her because he didn't get his way.

Only to start with, IIRC. After roundabout the filming for Fang Rock she told him to go fuck himself, and after that they were fine with each other!

Hard to say.

With regards to Baker being drunk, so what? 9/10ths of the BBC was drunk during that time.

He wasn't as bad as a lot of them. Watch Cook & Moore or Sir Richard Harris anytime - they are quite clearly visibly drunk during many performances. Doesn't take away from them being great talents.
Yeah, but my point is that's why he'd be egotistical, arrogant, and nasty. And he pretty much thought he was the show. I think the hard science nature of season 18 was exactly what the show needed to get out of the cheap low comedy rut it was in. And I also think Logopolis is the best send-off any Doctor's ever had (Androzani exempted). Imagine if Williams/Adams did Tom's regeneration. Doesn't bear thinking.

No idea how true or serious he was, but I definately recall Baker going on about how his idea of the perfect companion would be a victorian street urchin who constantly hid under the console. Or a head a cabbage.

Urchin? Isn't that how JNT tried to sell Adric? "Artful Dodger" and all that rubbish.

Was Williams the producer when he pitched the head of cabbage idea? Would love to seen his face when Baker brought that idea up. Or whoever the producer was.

I heard him talking about that in an interview, but assumed he wasn't being serious. Was he?

That would of been something fun to see :)
(though having heard the audio book version of Tom Baker's autobiography I have come the conlusion he really is full of himself and fascinated by his own mentulae).

And according to the commentary on Robots of Death, they didn't initially have much in the way of plans for Leela post RoD -as initially she was pretty much going to be a one story companion.

I don't think he's crazy. He think he actually is a space alien who just happened to get cast in the role of a famous space alien! In this respect, I think he's one of the most appropriate actors ever to play the Doctor. His alien instincts perfectly dovetail with the character's alien-ness.

I also suspect that Matt Smith is an alien but probably from a different planet and definately one that has better assimilated to Earth culture than Baker ever has.
