What if Dax came back as a guy?

Instead of Ezri, it could have been a Trill ambassador, played by Louise Fletcher, who despises Kai Winn at first site.

Actually, I would have preferred for the 'new' Dax to be a male - I think it would have reemphasized the whole uniqueness of the Trill race.

But alas, story issues were of apparently secondary concern to the issue of having more hot girls on the show.

In my view the new Dax shouldn't even have been on the show, since that has nothing whastoever to do with the show. There is no story value whatsoever in having had the post-Jadzia Dax on the show, either in Ezri form or any other form. Ironically, that point also applies pretty well to Jadzia Dax herself also. :D

Definitely wouldn't wanna see Dax come back as a guy that is present on the show. That would just be a bad rehashing of TNG's terrible "The Host" episode.

Why didn't they kill two birds with one stone and make Ezri Trek's first gay character?

Lesbians are easy though. Every male hetro liberal fan likes to see two chicks making out...purely because of the relevant gender issues, of course. :D

Two reasons why I think it would not have worked:

1. The series needs more than one female lead, even though you've got the female Founder, Kasidy, Leeta, and a couple other regular guest stars.

In it's final season, that really didn't matter. In fact, the Ezri stories shoehorned in probably could've been replaced with something better. So did they even need a new cast member at all? Not really. Put the money towards something else.

Not that Ezri was bad, just saying...the last season is bad time to add a new regular cast member.

That would've been hilarious, actually... How would Julian have coped? And Quark? Worf... he would've been understandably weirded out... "This... person... saw me... naked in a past life..."
:guffaw: You're probably right about that!
Just imagine how it would be in the men's room...

I wonder if it ever crossed Worf's mind that his wife had been male in more than one past life? ;) Maybe he's a bit more liberal minded than we assume.

Anyway, the Male Dax thing was a real missed opportunity. They just had Ezri be female for gender balance. They should have had a male Dax and a new female character.

^Right. Have a new female regular for gender balance and have the new He-Dax as a recurring character. Definite missed opportunity.

I'm sure it did, but he was never intimate with any one of her past hosts. This, would be a new experience. ;)

Something just dawned on me - joined Trill are technically all bisexual. The host may have preferences, but the nature of the symbiont means that they'll swing either way.

Or perhaps the Trill have moved beyond labels. There is no preference, just a combination of traits (personality? intelligence? wisdom? charisma?) that the combined Trill find attractive.

I agree.

It would have been better if Dax had come back as a male. I had thought that the Trils had to alternate how they award symbionts to Hosts anyway. One symbiont would be female, the next male, the next female and then male etc. I think that there was something wrong with the Dax symbiont and Ezri had to be joined unprepared.

2. A big subplot about gender issues is not what the series needed coming into the home stretch of the Dominion War/Emissary arcs.

I get sleepy thinking about the final season. Nothing else happened besides the war.

Worf: "I have dishonoured myself and my family yet again."
Dax: "Don't worry, i won't tell anyone the size of your shlong"
Worf: "I have no honour."
Dax: "But it's huge!"
Worf: "HONOURRRR"

It would have been very interesting, but I don't think there was enough time left in the series to develop it. Ezri Dax was a redundant character. Once Jadzia died, that should have been the last we heard of the Dax symbiont.

Re: EZRI

I DISAGREE STRONGLY. Ezri was a great character and well acted by young Nicole DeBoer and there should have been a season 8 just for more of her and Bashir's love affair across the stars.

Re: EZRI

I don't doubt Nicole De Boer did the best she could with the character, but it seemed superfluous. A whiny skittish type character being added when the home stretch of a colossal war, AND a divine battle between Prophets and Pah-Wraiths, was taking place really didn't fit into the series. Although I do agree that DS9 should have gone beyond seven seasons.
