Instead of Ezri, it could have been a Trill ambassador, played by Louise Fletcher, who despises Kai Winn at first site.

Why didn't they kill two birds with one stone and make Ezri Trek's first gay character?

Two reasons why I think it would not have worked:
1. The series needs more than one female lead, even though you've got the female Founder, Kasidy, Leeta, and a couple other regular guest stars.
Just imagine how it would be in the men's room...Apogeal Alpha01 said:

That would've been hilarious, actually... How would Julian have coped? And Quark? Worf... he would've been understandably weirded out... "This... person... saw me... naked in a past life..."You're probably right about that!

I'm sure it did, but he was never intimate with any one of her past hosts. This, would be a new experience.Temis the Vorta said:

I wonder if it ever crossed Worf's mind that his wife had been male in more than one past life?Maybe he's a bit more liberal minded than we assume.
Anyway, the Male Dax thing was a real missed opportunity. They just had Ezri be female for gender balance. They should have had a male Dax and a new female character.
Something just dawned on me - joined Trill are technically all bisexual. The host may have preferences, but the nature of the symbiont means that they'll swing either way.Odon said:

Lesbians are easy though. Every male hetro liberal fan likes to see two chicks making out...purely because of the relevant gender issues, of course.![]()

Or perhaps the Trill have moved beyond labels. There is no preference, just a combination of traits (personality? intelligence? wisdom? charisma?) that the combined Trill find attractive.

2. A big subplot about gender issues is not what the series needed coming into the home stretch of the Dominion War/Emissary arcs.
