Spoilers What happened the night the Ben turned on Luke

Sure it might be nice to get a backstory for Snoke, but it really doesn't matter. We know everything we need to know about Snoke, he was a Dark Sider who turned Ben Skywalker into Kylo Ren, nothing else about him really matters to the story being told.

We all forget the Emperor had NO backstory in TESB & ROTJ and wasn't even seen in ANH (was he even mentioned?)

In the New Hope novel, by Alan Dean Foster, the prologue gives a partial backstory about Palpatine in that he was a ambitious politician who rose to power and was ultimately elected as Chancellor, then at some point, declared himself Emperor. As I recall it goes into slightly greater detail about what Obi Wan discusses with Luke; the Republic, the Jedi, etc... I don't recall the prologue or the ANH novel ever mentioning that Palps was a Sith Lord or force sensitive in any way.

An empire obviously needs an emperor. And he's baaad. All I needed to know.

Someone smart here pointed out the difference between Wilder's Wonka and Depp's joyless creeper, who is EXPLAINED (away). Magic dies from too much splainin'. (cough Midichlorians cough)

Be glad that Luke's answer to Rey's "What is the Force?" question wasn't "Well, see, there are these symbiots in your blood, right? And they channel the power to you because everything needs a technobabble explanation."

I'm sure Snoke will get his own novel eventually. If Phasma gets one I can't see Snoke not getting one.

I hope the supposed Live Action show being developed for Disney for their streaming service will be set in the gap between ROTJ & TFA and will hopefully detail Who Snoke is and how he became Supreme Leader.

"The truth largely depends on our point of view"

Thanks to an excellent story and direction, we got to see both points of view. They all held some truth, and they shaped the path of the characters and the galaxy.

What happened? A combination of both. Luke was determined to turn Ben away, feared for how far he had gone, was ashamed that he was about to kill his nephew, Ben woke up, sensed the intent, and started slaying. He didn't kill Luke, just burned and ran.

Going into your nephew's room at night while he is sleeping and igniting your lightsaber over his head, even if just in an instance of thoughtlessness, is a major fuck up

Not sure how Luke's actions (or at least the intent) still counts as light side... he did act out of fear, after all...

But I love Xerxes' answer: Luke could/should have loved Ben. He went after Vader in RotJ because he still sensed good in a man who tortured his sister, who froze his best friend in carbonite and mutilated his own son. And he goes to his sleeping nephew with the intent of killing him? Indeed, failure to learn from your own experiences.

Yup, and one that cost Luke and the galaxy dearly.

Vader didn't have a backstory in ep IV, did he? SW is better as myth than modern psychodrama, cause/effect, Western culture/logic.

Except this is the franchise where (just about) every background character gets a back story. Snokes origins should be explored. Where did he come from? Clearly he had to have neen training while Palpatine was still alive, where was he during the OT? Even casual movie goers are curious who this guy is and his story.

Are they still after watching TLJ? I mean Snoke's gone. The only thing that interests me (as a semi-casual viewer) how he made contact with Ben and managed to turn him. But where he comes from? Not sure I care about that anymore as he's a non-entity.

I mean even after the prequels (strictly movies-canon speaking) we don't actually know all that much about Palpatine, either - when, how and where did he come into contact with the Sith (Darth Plaguis)? Just how old was this guy? How did he get to be a senator for Naboo? Etc. (And no, I haven't read any of the books published after 2000 or so, definitely none of the prequel-related books, I think I stopped before the NJO-series...)

I'm not even sure, the SW-universe needed the prequels since they just tell the story that's been hinted at in the OT. There's little to no new material (save the fact that the Jedi Order consisted of a bunch of quite orthodox, inflexible beings who were blind to reality - quite contrary to the benevolent point of view the OT offers).

Off-topic, still don't understand when the movies are aired on TV following their number, from 1-6... meaning, the whole twist at the end of ESB is spoiled right at the beginning...

Yup - cat's out of the bag on that one for us; still a surprise to Luke at the time. Hamill did a great job in that scene, of really looking horrible and freaked out.

I've only seen this new movie once; doesn't Luke say he went to see how Ben's soul was, not exactly to just kill him straight out? Can't remember. And yeah, drawing his lightsaber first (like in the tree on Yoda's planet?) goes wrong. It's possible for good people to screw up reaaaly badly.

I wonder if we still don't know what happened. We have two people's points of view. Truth is in the middle.

One thing I would like fleshed out more: why did Ben go so far to the dark? With Ani, it was to save Padme. Did Ben have a reason, or just the allure of power?
