What happened in the year after?

They certainly added to the "grandpa trying to be cool" feel.
Ooofff...

The gold badges also showed up in a couple shots before the time skip.

Probably just a continuity error. I'm going to guess those scene were shot after they shot the time skip scenes and someone just messed up.
They really shouldn't have bothered with the gold revision, they screwed them up seven ways to Sunday continuity-wise.

Picard's Alternate Ending

Sir Patrick Stewart said:
The writers came up with a lovely scene. It is dusk at Jean-Luc’s vineyard. His back is to us as he takes in the view, his dog at his side.

Then, off-screen, a woman’s loving voice is heard: “Jean-Luc? Supper’s ready!”

Is it Beverly Crusher’s voice? Laris’s? Someone we don’t know? It isn’t made clear. But Sunny was set to record the lines.

Heeding his wife’s call, Jean-Luc turns around, says to his dog, “C’mon, boy,” and heads inside. Dusk fades to night, and Picard fades into history.

I was really happy they stuck in a whole year before the D was put away. Ans the saucer section looks to have been cleaned up of it's crash marks during that time, too. There's plenty of time there for a few novels about our crew running about in the D, holding things together until all the other starships can be purged, repaired and put back out. Bring Laris in. Team up with the G. Bring back a couple more loose ends from TNG. It could be ...glorious!

So at the end of the season we had a years jump ahead. Do we know what happened in that period, since the Enterprise D was only deactivated 1 year later, was its crewed and sent on missions? What took so long for them to sort out the new Enterprise etc

Maybe they used the Enterprise D to protect Earth for the time being, after the Frontier Day Incident. At least until the they can be sure that the newer ships were no longer has any security compromise that can endanger Federation / Starfleet.
