What happened in the year after?

adamisme

So at the end of the season we had a years jump ahead. Do we know what happened in that period, since the Enterprise D was only deactivated 1 year later, was its crewed and sent on missions? What took so long for them to sort out the new Enterprise etc

I like to think the Enterprise-D was in service for that year we didn't see. It's symbolic of Picard's 30 episodes making up TNG's "eighth season".

I think there was probably a debate over whether or not to refit/repair the F, build a new G, or rename the Titan. If it were me, I would've been like, "The Hell with it! We've had too many Enterprises! Just stick with the D!" But that's only if it were me. Then someone probably countered with, "It's just been rebuilt! Do you want to see it get destroyed again?" Then someone countered with, "Why are we even building another ship if it's just going to be destroyed?" Finally someone comes up with the answer, "Why don't we just rename the Titan? They helped the former Enterprise crew and saved the day!" Then they all agreed.

Hey, we dunno their situation. Maybe Beverly and Laris really hit it off and cut Jean-Luc entirely out of the picture. ;)

Now there's a story I'd like to see. Jack didn't need a father - he got another mom instead! ;) (I mean they really left everything unsaid and open. All we know is that Jean-Luc doesn't seem to have had another major argument/incident with Crusher that made her leave again... not yet, anyway. Only a matter of time if you ask me, especially once Jack is off on his adventures on the Enterprise. On the Laris front we know absolutely nothing.)

Yeah, I mean, all we really know is that Jean-Luc and Beverly accompanied Jack on his initial trip to board the Enterprise-G and that they apparently attended at least one celebratory event together from which Jack displayed a picture in his quarters. That could encompass any number of scenarios -- from "Jean-Luc dumped Laris and married Beverly," to "Jean-Luc stayed with Laris but became a dedicated co-parent with Beverly as his close friend" to "Jean-Luc, Laris, and Beverly formed a committed throuple," to, "Jean-Luc and Laris broke up but he never got together with Beverly" to "Laris and Beverly got married and Jean-Luc is just a good friend."

The picture Jack has is an old picture of Sir Patrick and Gates McFadden attending an event in the 1990s, so, I doubt it's meant to be a recent picture, even in-universe. I mean neither of them still looks like they do on the pic. If they had wanted to showcase that Jean-Luc and Crusher went somewhere together in the year that has passed they could easily have either grabbed a picture from a recent PIC event or something OR they could have had Sir Patrick and McFadden pose for a pic, so, I think the pic was MEANT to show Jean-Luc and Crusher at a much earlier point in the timeline. It's probably a pic either Jean-Luc or Crusher kept around "for old times sake" and then handed to Jack. At least that would be my guess here.

But yeah, it's true, we don't know anything. It's equally possible that Jean-Luc and Laris broke up and he and Crusher are simply co-parenting now and Jean-Luc is spending time walking around with Number One on the vineyard. We don't know. Anything is possible. I for one love the idea of Laris and Crusher hooking up and dumping Jean-Luc in the process - that's the kind of hint I'd give if I had to continue this whole storyline. The idea of him and Crusher and Laris together reminds me of the original idea Michael Chabon had that involved Jean-Luc in a three-way marriage with Laris and Zhaban.

No. Your assumption was correct.
Yeah, the communicators change (the banners underneath the delta go from matte black to gold) to show the passage of time, so you can tell which scenes were supposed to be later.

Geordi still had some work to do on the D before she went out and got shot up by the uber-cube.

The port nacelle cover was a nightmare, etc. It might have needed another year's work to be museum ready.

I really didn't care for the leather bomber jackets. And the grimdark lighting certainly didn't help.

The gold badges also showed up in a couple shots before the time skip.

Probably just a continuity error. I'm going to guess those scene were shot after they shot the time skip scenes and someone just messed up.
