What Generation are You From and What Issues Defined Your Generation?

My Generation was and still is the Star Trek : The Next Generation group. And as you can see much to the dismay of the GOP that reality of ST:TNG is becoming more and more real.

Obama/Sisko the first black Commander-In-Chief / Deep Space Star Station Commander

LGBT winning equality rights / Sulu piloting a Starship

We don't fly around in space on donkeys, we fly around in space in Starships.

I'm in the generation that loves smartphones but still knows how to use a VCR.

I'm also in the generation that was constantly dying of dysentery while trying to ford the river.

I grew up with 3 channels on TV, when it was a selling point that a new show was in color. Remote control was by voice command, directed to whoever was closest to the TV. Usually, the patriarch to one of his offspring.

A 25" color TV was state of the art, and a piece of furniture to boot.

My parents just got rid of their old console TV, and it made me sad. I wanted to keep it and turn it into a cabinet.

I was born in 1970. What generation does that make me?

What will the call the ones after z?

How long is each generation btw?

I learned that 30 year olds were part of Generation Y this week (I always thought it was X) so there's that. What issues have defined my generation? Smartphones, Apple taking over the world, War on Terror, 9/11, and a very divided United States.

I think it varies. I know X starts in the late 60/early 70's and then Y is from early 1980's to the early 2000's.

We must be approximately coevals. The defining issues of my time were the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war. Computers were owned by government and big business and took up an entire room. Everybody smoked. Cars weren't yet required to have seatbelts, but every car had at least four ashtrays.

And my Star Trek was the original -- no bloody TNG, DS9, VOY or ENT!

I was born the year JFK took the oath of office, and grew up with Vietnam hanging overhead like a threatening black cloud and the Apollo program inspiring the world toward a new era among the stars. There were riots and assassinations, there were love ins and heroic martyrs. There was Woodstock and Watergate. It was the Age of Aquarius and the eve of destruction. The issues that defined the times were the Civil Rights Movement, Women's Liberation, and the Sexual Revolution. And I was born at just the right time, because these are the things that most resonate with my heart and my mind.

I'm 47, so I guess Gen X? The criteria seems to vary.

Damn straight.

Re: What Generation are You From and What Issues Defined Your Generati

I was born into the dying years of the cold war, with the collapse of the Soviet Union on the horizon. The world made the transition from worrying about ten thousand nuclear bombs to worrying about someone with one, or a dozen.

Not a perfect world, just better than the one that existed before in some ways.

But along the way we've lost too. In jettisoning the bad and evils of the past, did we discard good things too?

We lost privacy, and community, and trust, and the perception of order.

I wasn't alive in the fifties and sixties, did we ever have these things?

:)

I'm one year younger and have always been told I'm Gen X. I think we fall firmly in the Gen X camp, though at the older end of it. If you had a bad perm and shoulder pads during your teenaged years you're Gen X. ;)

Re: What Generation are You From and What Issues Defined Your Generati

I never understood the need for labels. "Are you a mod or a rocker?" "I'm a mocker."

I'm content with 'approaching retirement age'. ;)

Re: What Generation are You From and What Issues Defined Your Generati

These generations don't necessarily make sense, anyway, and they seem to be broken down in 20 year increments, which lumps people together that may not necessarily have that much in common.
