What games are you playing currently?

GOG is a great site, and I personally prefer it to Steam, especially when it comes to older games that don't always work properly on modern systems. If you buy the same game on Steam, you're not always guaranteed it will work without a lot of modification, and that's speaking from experience. Some of the older games I have on Steam are unplayable as they're offered as-is, with it being up to the end-user to figure out how to get working, and that can be quite a headache.

It's excellent value and all the games with the exception of Kingpin installed and run perfectly. I've not had a chance to get Kingpin working but hopefully it just needs a bit of tweaking. I really admire GOG's business model by allowing the installers to be downloaded which is so much easier than Steam and shows they trust their customers. Being part of the team that prepares classic titles for newer systems would be a dream job.
 
Why does everyone seem to like the second one more than the first Homeworld?

I have both on GOG and have played around with them but never really committed to playing out the story to either one.

Which one do you guys think is worth playing first?

May as well play them in order. Only thing argubaly "wrong" with the first is that Salvage Corvettes are so overpowered that you can gain a massive fleet by stealing everything you see.

I do recall the remake of HW1 having some big problems - formations didn't work, and one of the early missions was now far too hard. This may be fixed now, its been a while. In any case the original version is still available on gog and steam.

Yeah, I really admire them too. They do have a smaller selection, but If there's an older game I'm interested in, I'll check GOG if they have it first and more likely than not get them there. Getting older games running on Steam has always been a hassle, particularly games from the 90's, and the black window that promply flashes and disappear only to realize your game is not working can be frustrating, especially when you have no idea how to fix it.
 
Finished AC Shadows…sorta. Well the credits rolled and I saw the Epilogue… I’d honestly forgotten how modern AC games worked and finished Naoe’s story which meant roll credits.

IDK for as much as I enjoyed the first few hours when it felt like there was a compelling story somewhere in there, Ubisoft did Ubisoft things and progression was still gated behind mind numbing grind quests with no emotional payoff or loot payoff that matters (I don’t think Ive ever gotten gameplay value out of the constant loot pickups). If they removed that one aspect of gameplay it would do a world of good for these games because the grind of doing random quests and activities to level just destroys any sense of storytelling.

By the time I got to the end, I had forgotten half of what had taken place at the beginning. The feeling I’ve come away with is that “this could have been so much better.” It’s not bad and both Naoe and Yasuke are fun characters but it could have been more. It’s just Ubisoft can’t quite stop being the Ubisoft of the last decade.
 
Started playing Atomfall and am really enjoying. It's got such a Bethesda game vibe that I had to look up whether it was running Creation Engine. Apparently the devs were inspired by New Vegas and it's got that sorta feel but in a very different way. I don't trust any of the factions I've encountered so far and that's made me think really hard about what decisions I should make/who I should help or shouldn't. Immersing you into the world the game really shines. They've nailed the environmental storytelling and they've laid out enough mystery through in game lore and notes as well as conversations that it gets you interested in what on Earth caused the exclusion zone in the first place and what the hell is going on in the various factions in it,

My biggest complaint so far is that it took the resident evil route when it comes to inventory slots, And action doesn't pause if you need to get into your inventory to grab a heal or new weapon. Better have that wheel set.

This is a game that if it was on Creation Kit... I'd be thinking about writing mods for right now which is one of the highest compliments I can give. We'll see how it all plays out but about 6hrs of play in and it's got all the right feel of a good Beth game.
 
Will definitely have to grab that one at some point. I love the Bethesda games, if only for their exploration and feel immersed in their worlds. Thanks for the impressions.

I've been playing Avowed for the past couple of weeks. I'm enjoying the gameplay loop, but the storyline is kinda meh. Some of the side quests are pretty cool though.
 
Ok i tried out that Atomfall and i think we have found the game makers who can make a real Dr Who game, because as i played it, i was expeting to see Pertwee's doctor appear at some point, or until soilders come to the rescus, as the game really does have 70s Dr who production look and feel about it.
 
Trails Through Daybreak 2, Jedi Survivor, Baldur's Gate 3, Prince of Persia: Crown of Time.

Of these I'm putting most time into Trails because it's the only low energy compliant game. All the others are high energy games. Baldur's Gate 3 I took a hiatus from after putting like 300 hours in, I need to finish my tactician and honour runs and I need to re-finish my original resist Durge run when I didn't realize the consequences of losing the Orin duel the first time.

The other two I just started. I'm kind of struggling with them. Most of the things about the games are good but in both cases, the combat is so focused on parry timing it really drags down the experience.

I don't get modern gaming's obsession with parry timing. Old action/adventure games, you won by learning attack patterns and applying clever strategies based on spatial imagination to avoid damage. When it's all about parry timing though all you're doing is memorizing attack animations. I'm fine dying because I didn't get out of the way of an attack but doing it because I didn't memorize the attack well enough and was 0.01s off with the parry just feels stupid and unfair. That's just not fun gaming.

I'm wondering if with modern AAA games I should just find a good Youtube channel to watch the story without having to deal with this crap. Cause the stories are often great. Just with these combat systems all about memorizing how to react and not based on creative tactics, it's just not fun to play. And not these two but a lot of modern games, they expect you to do so much repetitive fetch quests and grinding between anything moving forward. Even when other aspects of the game are great it doesn't feel worth it.

dark souls/sekiro. The good thing is now that Elden Ring has been out for a few years the obsession with parrying will likely come to an end. Or maybe it won’t. I found out my method of beating the game (which was to adapt to the idea of one to two hits and you’re dead by dodge rolling and going all in on blood katanas wasn’t the usual way). Players love building tanks and parrying in DS games. I find that so boring. Then again I’m a dps that dies a lot when first learning mechanics bc I don’t like blocking (I’d rather get out of the way) so take my fighting preferences with a grain of salt. I hate grinding and would rather learn the hard way.

Jedi Survivor isn’t as big on parrying (it’s more like Elden Ring in that there’s more than one way to beat bosses). Survivor’s hardest parts are some of the plat forming mechanics imo which had a high initial learning curve.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is now called Grand Theft Auto 5 Legacy on steam. Why the change?

I think it's because there's an upcoming version of the game with higher requirements that will require people to convert their GTA Online characters to the new version, but at the same time, they realize not everyone will be able to play the new version, so they're keeping the old version active alongside the new one. But I don't think the older version will be updated anymore.

The older version GTA V was one of the best optimized games anywhere. it ran on low end hardware well at 1080p. I had it on my old Acer Aspire 3 with 32gig ram and shitty radeon Vega graphics and it ran fine
 
^ Well, the old version was also released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, so it makes sense that it would run well on almost any PC.
Quite true. I prefer the old version. Just wish that they would have released a version of it that was just the base game without the online half.


Another question are there any games you refuse to remove from your systems?

I only have one and it's Horizon Forbidden West that's my zen place
