Spoilers What familiar characters might we see...

Tough to say, but here's my best guess:

Chief Engineer Leland T. Lynch
Neelix
Janice Lester
Ru'afo
Mirror Kira
Colonel West
Cyrano Jones
Cmdr. Calvin "Hutch" Hutchinson
Galactic High Comissioner Ferris
Shinzon's Viceroy
Isabella
Kai Opaca

That is a great list of characters everyone wants to see again. I like to add a few more:

Pakleds
Wesley
Picard's dog (Number one)
Daimon Bok
Kes
Ensign Mayweather
Weyoun
st. John Talbot
Noonian Soong
Lethe

Paris and Janeway's kids.
As Discovery is a bit strapped for resources in the future, they are trading, foraging and hunting for food to ease the strain on the replicators. So right now, they're in a bog on this damp, faraway planet, where Georgiou is roasting some of these weird salamander things she found.
Tilly (gleefully, with her mouth full): "You should try some Michael, it's really delicious."
Burnham: "Do we even know what this is?"
Georgiou: "Does it really matter? It's meat."
Burnham (whips out a tricorder): "Just to make sure." *presses a few buttons, tricorder beeps and chirps* "That's curious. I'm not sure how this is possible, but according to the tricorder, those salamanders are a 99.79% match for Human DNA."
*beat*
Tilly's eyes go wide and the meat falls out of her mouth before she starts gagging. Georgiou blinks a few times, then shrugs and keeps eating.

Data. There was a short story published once (Strange New Worlds or New Voyages) set in the distant future, where the only living beings on Earth were the ageless Data and Lore.

Is that the story with the Enterprise Infinity and most of the crew was holograms of the TOS and TNG crews?

Then she says " Tastes like Kelpian."

Then she says " Tastes like Kelpian."
Saru (harrumphs): "I wonder how you know that, Captain Georgiou."
Georgiou (with a smug grin): "You really should try to relax, Captain Saru. All this tension and chronic stress is known to make Kelpien taste bitter."

And that's how Georgiou was unceremoniously stuffed into the Red Angel suit and sent flying back into the 23rd century.

I really can't see them bringing in any familiar characters. This is Discovery's chance to break out, as it were, and tying it to "hey! Remember this person from TNG" or whatever might be seen as a gimmick, and nothing more.

Though I can see them looking up what happened to the families and friends. I think it would be interesting to see Burnham's reaction to finding out Spock died twice.
I get that. But Trek can't seem to resist reuniting people through whatever the script calls for. Everything we had heard about PIC was that virtually no one had been approached about making an appearance from the old crews, and now we hear it's going to be cameos left and right. So we'll see.

"Benedict Cumberbatch isn't Khan" is the benchmark of bullshit from TPTB. And Kurtzman was involved with that one.

I'm hoping the cameos, like the one they announced with Troi and Riker, are because of the plot an not just fan service.

Well, there's always this guy....

He'd done a lot of time hopping before he showed up in the Enterprise-D.
:techman:

No that was another (totally bonkers) one.

That's a really cool idea though. With 32nd century technology they could do a Babylon 5 "Decontruction of Falling Stars" and resurrect anyone as a holographic replica. Chris Pine wants a cameo? HoloKirk! They want Michael to talk to Amanda again? Reg Barclay can show up for some random reason?

The possibilities are endless. They just have to convince the audience that these holographic replicas are worth emotionally investing in, which isn't easy (see: "These Are The Voyages")

I wept like a baby at the end of Spielberg's "A.I." film, with that resurrection scene.

I was always under the impression that his trip to the Enterprise-D was his first stop.

No, I mean they should've had Rasumussen on ENT before he went into the future, since the 22nd Century is when he's from. Matt Frewer might've looked a little older by the early-2000s, but throw on some hair dye and he would've been good to go.

I suppose he could've visited the distant future and decided to backtrack because: A) it was a dystopian future with a lack of technology or B) the technology was so hopelessly advanced that there was no way he'd be able to reproduce it, like showing a microchip to a caveman and expecting him to make one and use it.

That would have been a nice connection to TNG. Bonus if it also involved Daniels somehow.
