Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

I think both look good, they show different time eras..just like how cars in the 1960s looks different from cars in the 1990s, ships looks different in the 2260s and the 2290s

You have a point, i just want to see friendly match between this 2 classic design.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

Well, the images aren't ideal (somehow the refit looks more like an AMT kit in that shot, with overdeveloped panel lines), but okay, yeah, this is better than 'who.'

I think the refit is for the most part an elegant refinement of the original design, but it sacrifices the glorious nacelle caps and introduces something clunky with the top of the dorsal, where the strut goes in. Also, the little impulse control cap on top of the dish at the back usually photographs a little toylike, so that is less than ideal.

Having said all that ... the refit (as seen in TMP, and TMP-era pr photos) is still better, because that sumbitch just glows! It seems like a piece of art to me, whereas the original design, which is beautiful in its own way and iconic as all get out, is just slightly (loveably) awkward.

The series ship is like a sibling that you love, but the movie ship is the lovely creature you feel compelled to possess.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

I love both of them, and they're both beautiful in their own rights. My personal favorite, however is the refit NCC-1701.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

The refit seems to make more sense from a design perspective. It looks like the predecessor of an Enterprise D, and a successor to the Ent NX-01, from the nacelles to the obviously plated hull. However what’s in a name? The re-shot Enterprise from In A Mirror Darkly, was a beautiful ship!

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

BTW, does anyone know what the light is underneath, at the center of the Connie's saucer?

Was never identified in canon, but various other sources (like the original model kit specs) called it the Planetary Sensor Dome.

Is this a better image?:

Can you guess which one I voted for? :D

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

I preferred the exterior design of the Refit 1701, but I hated the interiors. They reeked of the 1970's (obviously) and were truly fugly. The interior design of pre-refit 1701 was much nicer.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

NCC-1701!

(But I'd like the secondary hull to be more rounded like the refit)

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

The original.

I don't like the refit nacelles nearly as much, or the swept back pylons holding them up. I also don't much care for the changes to the saucer.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

I'm with the refit all the way. One of the best science fiction designs ever made (IMHO). For me, second only to the TOS Battlestar design.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

Refit. It shows the obvious benefit of a bigger budget and a model designed to be seen on a big screen; not to mention it's excellently designed.

Which is not to belittle Jeffries' classic design.

Re: Who is the better Enterprise?

Lovely though the refit is, I have to say I favour the original. The swept back pylons give the refit an unnessecary "streamlined" look (IMHO).

I have to agree with chancellorjake about the refit interiors, I really didn't like them, especially the engine room.
