You left out Stewart Granger. ;)

On purpose. I also left out Charlton Heston, although that was . . . interesting.

Dang you guys have make me want to watch some Holmes. To late now and I too tired to read any.

A couple of older recommendations:

Murder by Decree with Plummer as Holmes and James Mason as Watson.

Study in Terror with John Neville as Holmes.

Both, as it happens, are about Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper.

And, to give credit where it's due, the Stewart Granger version of The Hound of the Baskervilles also stars . . . William Shatner!

Thus bringing us back to Star Trek. :)

Shatner was in a Holmes story? I didn't know that. I know he was in films with Spencer Tracy and other popular actors back before Trek but not in a Holmes story. Hopefully it will be on Netflix. Thanks for the suggestion.

It was a TV-movie from the Seventies, a few years after Star Trek. Granger plays Holmes and Shatner plays an important supporting role.

Good luck!

...

Although I also have fond memories of Rathbone, Peter Cushing, Christopher Plummer, John Neville, and even Roger Moore as Holmes.

Then there's British actor Ronald Howard in the 1954 Sherlock Holmes series, where that single season ran in syndication for years. And George C. Scott, in They Might Be Giants, who believes himself to be Sherlock Holmes.

^ Yes, the 1954 series was good fun.

I'll always love the original, but I've been seeing it for decades. Every inch of the ship is intricately mapped out in blueprints and schematics. It's done everything. There's nothing new.

With the reboot Enterprise, all that's old, is new again. We haven't seen all of this ship, or all that it can do yet. It's exciting.:)

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

Seriously? I like RDJ, but his Holmes is barely top five.

I like RDJ versions for some reason. Basil Rathbone would be my top for the past era and RDJ would be my top pick for the modern era.

I've been a fan of RDJ since Chaplin. He's a damn good character actor, and brings something to a role that would be missing if anyone else played it. It's that "can't quite put my finger on it" thing, but he's got it.

The proportions of the new Enterprise are all wrong/off.

If the original was a real world spacecraft, I'd concede the point. However, since they're all fictional, I'd rather have the design creatively reimagined every now and then.

It's pretty obvious if you went into warp using the design of JJ Enterprise a core breach would happen and the ship would be destroyed, Anyone with a basic knowledge of warp dynamics can see that!

:p

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

People are entitled to their opinion, if a design of a fictional spaceship looks off to them, just as others are entitled to believe that the same design looks great, or even that it doesn't matter. No one can be right about that sort of thing, in any objective sense. It's a question of what one personally enjoys.

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

The only real part of the JJ Enterprise I dislike are the nacelles, but I would have picked the refit movie Enterprise. It took the original design and improved on it.

Do you mean to say that they're wrong or off in some functional way, or just that they don't match the familiar dimensions/proportions of the Enterprise from the original television series?

Well we have had a few votes. Feel free to say why you like the ship you voted for guys. We have more votes than people who have responded.

I think the nacelles look at bit top heavy. They did make the saucer bigger but the nacelles still look to big. The TMP refit was so nice in that the nacelles were streamline and just seemed to fit the overall dimensions of the ship. While the TOS version was pretty streamlines the TMP refit was even more so.

I think the TMP refit is something that hasn't aged very well and a huge part of it is the nacelles. I think Abrams was right to change the proportions to give the new Enterprise its own flavor.

I think they could have used the nacelles they designed but they might have looked better if they were smaller. The nacelles seem to overpower the rest of the ship.

The design threw me when I first saw it. But I think it works well with the "hot rod" motif Abrams was going for.

Exactly. All the right parts, just sexed up for a new generation of Trek fans.
