What do you want in the Star Wars Blu-Ray set out next year?

Its a pipe dream, but with the tech behind bluray, it would be nice to have more than one, if not all, versions of the film on the discs (ie 1977, Special Edition, dvd versions).

^^What he said.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if it was ONLY the original theatrical releases remastered to HD, I'd pay a premium for them.

Perhaps it's not a pipe dream so much as a bong dream. :vulcan:

Peace

I would like to see the various versions as well. George Lucas could never have predicted the current tech when he made the decision never to release the originals again.

I would also like to see a deleted scene section.

Oh, and I also want an advertisement for Episodes VII, VII, and IX (the ones we were promised years and years ago).

If we can't get all the different versions via seamless branching (or, at least, a majority of the versions...even the five cut release of Blade Runner isn't a complete overview of all the different edits, and that's only one film with fewer theatrical re-releases than any of the films in the OT) I'd at least like a comprehensive section of deleted material.

^ And when were we ever "promised" Episodes 7-9? Wasn't it only a rumor that those would ever get made?

I am pretty sure that back in 1980 or so Lucas did announce that Star Wars would be a nine film series. At the time, he also mentioned that the Droids and Chewbacca would be in all nine films.

I had a newspaper clipping of this for years, which is why I remember it so clearly.

This question is just set to get some of us to answer a certain obvious answer I think.

I have a video tape somewhere that I bought at a convention years ago that was just a couple of hours of different news clips, people waiting in line and stuff from the time of the original release. It was kind of fascinating just on its own, I wouldn't mind seeing something like that, I don't own the latest DVD offering so I don't know if there's anything like that in there.

I don't know about *promised* but I think it was certainly understood at one point that it was intended.

I remember Leonard Maltin went to Skywalker Ranch in 96/97 to have a first look at the Special Editions, and it was mentioned that "Star Warriors" would be looking forward to another SIX Star Wars films, prequels and sequels, in the next 10-15 years (which leaves George two years to make three movies - "You can do it!").

You remember correctly.

Yes the subject of Lucas promising that there would be nine films is the topic of a book called "The Secret History of Star Wars" which covers the revisionist history that Lucas has attempted to "cover" up and the author examines George's own personal history up to the writing of the original movie. I would highly recommend reading it. Conduct a Google search and you should be able to find it free for download.

Yeah, the basic idea was that there were series after series of Star Wars related films and the profits from the films (made and directed by other people) would allow Lucas to run a studio for 'serious' films.

[rant]Can we forget 7-9 please? They're not gonna happen so get over it. We're discussing the Blu-Ray release and this thread is going too far of topic.[/rant]

I'd imagine there'd be a massive deleted scenes section. The early footage from ANH that was released in poor quality on CD in the late 90s will probably get a decent make over. They might even complete the footage of the first Luke intro and show us the battle in orbit from his location.

From the ones I remember there's a whole heap of ANH footage, but some of it is alternate stuff I think, so probably not worth putting in alternate takes unless needed?

In Empire I hope they complete the Wampa sequence, and for Jedi they touch up the sandstorm footage. Doesn't Vader choke the Death Star commander as well?

Theatrical ESB. No shriek as Luke drops down in Cloud City. No wimpy "tell my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival" by someone who's clearly not James Earl Jones. No pacing issues with "new" scenes of Vader flying into his star destroyer. No superfluous robots in the background.

BTW, why is there nobody ever standing up for irvin kershner's director rights with this movie? ESB was just as much his baby, Lucas was almost completely hands off on the directing of this. He came to set maybe 3 times according to Irvin. He was NOT a "proxy" for George the way Marquand apparently was in ROTJ. The script was initially written by Leigh Brackett, and then by Kasdan with Lucas and Irvin in a penthouse where they locked themselves away and wrote it. It wasn't an "all George" movie - George contributed exactly what he's good at, the universe and general story, without having to direct actors or write dialogue. Just monkeying around with this movie endlessly years later, is something people would scream bloody murder if someone else did it to a respected director on a beloved movie. I've never heard Kershner complain so maybe he doesn't mind, but I can't help but wonder what would happen if he said "don't change my movie!".

While I dislike a lot of ANH changes, I can't deny that movie is more or less George's movie, being the writer, director, and a primary producer along with Kurtz (though everybody seems to have whitewashed out the rather prominent role of George's ex-wife).

ESB is just as much, if not more, Irvin Kershner's movie, and I wish that was respected more. One of the reasons George hated the studio system was because of the way they could monkey around with his films, but here he is doing it to someone else's.

I've only seen the 2004 DVDs once; I forgot all this crap was even in it! LOL

I doubt we'll ever see the original theatrical versions ever again. It's clear that the special editions are Lucas's preferred version of the trilogy.

I don't mind the new versions. I own those "limited editions" that came out with both the new and old versions and I found the older version a bit dull. I honestly prefer the CGI additions.

I DO however agree some of the additions aren't necessary, such as the han-shoots-first scene, but they don't distract from my viewing pleasure.
