I actually get excited again about watching new live action Trek every week. SNW did that, and for that I'm very grateful.
I was about to create a "First Impressions" thread for SNW like I did for Discovery, Picard and Lower Decks, but I saw this thread and it basically serves the same purpose. I try to avoid creating new threads unless there really is nothing appropriate.
So for my First Impressions so far I like it. I've made complaints about production design, and yes, I do have some of those issues here as well. So I won't belabor the point yet again. Suffice it to say I'd prefer a set design more consistent with the original series era we saw before. And Trekkies being who we are, there's strong feelings for and against that.
So setting that aside for the moment I like the rest of the show mostly. I start with the positives. I've only gotten the first 2 episodes done so far (for personal reasons I haven't watched much Star Trek until the last week or so). I love that they are sticking with an episodic formula. I don't mind some continuing storylines throughout the series, but I love that the main plot of each episode is standalone. With the season why arcs we've seen on the other current shows it's nice to just have an episode of the week show. It's a great change of pace. So many shows in general today are serialized. It's nice to shake things up with something new, or I guess retro would be more correct ,since older shows were generally more episodic. And the first 2 episodes I thought had great stories.
I also liked seeing the return of the actors playing Captain Pike, Spock and Number One.
Now, what I didn't like so much? I'm not a huge fan of having Cadet Uhura, Nurse Chapel, M'Benga and Samuel Kirk on the Enterprise at this point. Having all these characters from the original series era show up just seems a bit too much to me. It's nothing against the actors playing the roles. It's just a bit of an eye roll for me. Next thing you know James Kirk, Scotty, Sulu, McCoy and Chekov will start showing up. And I wish we got to see some more characters from "The Cage" like Dr. Boyce and Jose Tyler. It's not a fatal flaw (at least so far), but it just bugged me a bit. There were a number of novels written about that era and I preferred what they did. The only two original series era characters on the ship at this particular time were Spock of course, and Scotty (who was not chief engineer yet, he had come aboard a few years after "The Cage" IIRC). I think Dr. Piper from WNMHGB had also come aboard sometime during Pike's later command to replace a retired Dr. Boyce IIRC as well.
I hope the show does revisit Boyce, Tyler, Garrison, and Colt. someday. Maybe Pitcairn will return to replace Hemmer.I tgibk I'm with you pretty much 100%. I love this new show but I wouldn't have minded seeing more of the cage crew. The ones that were on the bridge and the planet. Really cool to have them expanded later. But interested in any more Kirk era characters at this point. I want Pike and crew. But again I am really enjoying the stories and much better than the serialized stuff.

I've head canonned "Other woman on the bridge" as a young Ortegas.

2254 Ortegas before someone showed her a cooler way to cut her hair.![]()
Yup. So maybe ortegas will get a flashback wearing it with her old hairstyle. LolThose uniforms are still canon. April and Pike wore them in his photo from his cabin.![]()
I finished watching the first season. I like it okay. But it just doesn't provide the same satisfaction as DS9/TNG/Voyager. So it doesn't satisfy my desire for Star Trek. I suppose I should be grateful we got three shows of a similar style, because I don't think it's coming back.
No, and it shouldn't.
How do you recreate the past and why is that a good idea?because I don't think it's coming back.
I love TOS dearly but replicating that look and feel right down to the atomic level wouldn't work nowadays. Let Trek as created in its own decade stand on its own. TNG was often some of the best one-hour dramatic television of its time but I don't need a return to that.
Indeed. It's time to let go of the past and allow each series to stand or fall on it's own. TOS and TNG were great for their day and nothing new will take away from that. But, that doesn't mean newer shows need to replicate it either.I love TOS dearly but replicating that look and feel right down to the atomic level wouldn't work nowadays. The original Star Trek has always been my favorite show…..like I can’t remember a time in my life when it wasn’t my favorite show. I don’t want SNW to end up looking like it, because it won’t work. ENT and DS9 showed that.
