What do fans think of...Rod Roddenberry?

Like him? Dislike him? Is he trying to cash in on his dad's legacy? Is he genuinely interested in Star Trek? What are your opinions of him?

Seems from what I read of him to be a nice enough guy, not self-impressed or enough of a self-promoter to stand out in that business. He doesn't seem to be under any illusions that his name entitles him to anything other than the inevitable attention that does come with it.

I have always thought him to be rather unassuming and a nice guy. Of course people will naturally look to him to carry the torch with both his parents so heavily involved in Trek. And since Majel is basically retired now I would assume he has taken up running the family businesses. Trek will always be a part of his life but rather than run from it he has embraced it. To be honest I think he could be a lot worse about things than he actually is.

(And if this is about what he said in that article I don't think he said anything out of turn. I felt part of it may have been taken out of context though.)

Unlike some other folks who've been associated in various ways with Trek, Rod is usually quick to point out that he has neither control nor has wielded much influence over Trek and that he has not been in a position to contribute much to the Paramount productions. That's refreshing.

As for Rod, he seems respectful of his dad's creation so he can't be all bad.

I don't know much about R. Roddenberry. I know he was in favor of seeing an admittedly gay character on Voyager, which is something the Great Bird was in favor of. So I think he gets the social commentary side of Trek, understands that it is supposed to push forward, not in a liberal or conservative way, but in a human way.

Nice guy! I met him when he was a long-haired, gregarious, polite Californian surfer punk dude, studying at university. He was pretty cool, ate his food, chatted to his Mom's houseguests... and was then racing out to meet up with friends.

I look at his photos, as he looks today, and can't believe how much time has elapsed (for both of us) since December 1991.

Actually, he seemed to have been just about the opposite of a nerd in his (relative) youth - apparently true for his father as well.
