What do fans think of...Rod Roddenberry?

I've had the chance to interact with him and speak with others who did so, at a local convention a few times. Rod always seems to be very fan oriented. He spends time just chatting or relaxing, brings blooper tapes, talks about whatever you want. He's a very low maintenance type of guest, the kind many conventions would benefit from having.

So does he have some say in the future of the franchise (or was it what I said previously)?

It's what you said. Pretty much. Though I detect a hint of Papparazi voyerism. The OP's neighbours must really love him following them around seeking personal approval of the way junior is living his life.

Great guy. Did a radio show with him at I-Con a couple of years ago when he was there shooting some of Trek Nation, so everyone on the show got to talk with him for a couple of hours.

For someone who could be a complete arrogant ass with an entitlement complex, he's about as far from that as you could imagine. Super nice. He actually came across as very interested in the effect that his dad's work had on the world, and not in a Trekkies "where are the freaks?" kind of way. He was looking at the effect Trek has had on real people's lives, from as many walks of life as he could get. Not trying to exploit the fans, but elevate them. I respect that a lot.

Okay just checking to see if my statement was accurate

I've seen him a few times on G4 whenever their Attack of the Show series has something Star Trek related, and he always came across as a very easygoing kind of guy to me.

He seems sincere when you read what he (or his staff) have written at Roddenberry.com. The items they sell look fantastic but his prices are ridiculous. He could do more than double his volume if he would make his prices reasonable, and comparable to what you can get on eBay. I have looked at the site many times but have never bought anything.

Seems like an okay guy but I put about as much stock in what he says and thinks as anyone who posts around here. He's an interested observer like the rest of us I suppose.

My father created Star Trek, and I.. I.. well, you get the picture.

. . . and my greatest contribution to Trek lore was destroying the 3 footer in the family swimming pool.

Re: What Do Fans Think Of ... Rod Roddenberry?

I don't really know the guy, but -- to tell the truth -- from the interviews I saw with him he always comes across as a bit self-absorbed. As if he is of the opinion that he has (or should have) influence over the franchise. Gee, it's just his father who created Trek -- not himself! But that's just my personal perception.

So please, don't be cruel to me, all you Rod Roddenberry aficionados ... :D

"Rod" Roddenberry Jr, I like him he was respect for the creation and been a very positive influence bringing together writers, old cast members...to promote or talk about this show.
He's no slouch, he worked hard as production assistant for StarTrek and his very active in science helping out NASA, JPL and getting behind Burt Rutan & the Ansari X PRIZE for re-usable manned flight.

Re:

What do I think of (dot dot dot removed) of Rod Roddenberry?

Never heard of him until the current Trektoday article.

Eh. He's as relevant as any of you.

Re:

He strikes me as a nice enough guy, but that's all. I don't know that he has any special insights into Star Trek, or his father's work in general. His comments are rather superficial.

He seems a bit tragic to me. I think he's trying to find his own place, perhaps. He's not exactly shoe-horning himself into Star Trek -- nor could he, production-wise, at this late date. His comments lead me to think that he did not really know his dad at all, because of Gene's age and health problems.

And so my sense is that he's trying to figure out who his dad was, by trying to look at his work and -- frankly -- by trying to understand the fans. We, the obsessed, may know Gene better than Rod.

And that is very sad, indeed.

Re:

^Huh? Rod was doing a university course when his father passed away in 1991, and Gene Sr was only gravely ill for a year or two before he died. Rod knows who his Dad was.

I'm posting to get the SUBJECT line to show up again...as it's been missing from the last few posts.
