What did you like or didn't like about TMP

Everything except the Enterprise flyby. That was excessively long. I didn't mind the flight into V'Ger although I liked it better when it was called 2001: A Space Odyssey. Okay, and Ilia's stupid hat.

I could also have lived without seeing the Decker unit, but I suppose some people might have liked it and it's an interesting take--in the future, pants will reveal batch.

I think I enjoy the film more after reading Roddenberry's novelization, which, if it'd been translated into the film, in a significant way more of a reboot of Trek than Trek 11 ever hoped to be.

I liked the epic scale, the feel of vastness of space. I didn't like the wooden acting (especially the scene after the transporter accident comes to mind) and the uniforms were just horrible.

I like the music, the visual effects, the ship designs and the props. (In fact, my Diamond Select Toys TMP phaser arrived today, and I love it.) Everything else is...bad. I almost feel compelled to rewatch the film to see if my opinion has improved any since the last time, but I'm afraid of losing another 19 hours of my life.

(shrugs) I was sort of being glib there, but to me that would be the moment when the film jumps the shark...among other things, the already-not-great pacing stops even trying.

I don't like the costume design. The color pallete of 70s earth tones doesn't do anything for me. Give me the bright colors of the original series or the red TWOK uniforms over the TMP uniforms any day.

The set design was top notch, although I prefer the way it was lit in the subsequent films (particularly TWOK).

I'm not a big fan of Wise's overuse of the split-diopter.

Jerry Goldsmith's score was and is magnificent. Easily the best part of the film, creatively.

This. I think I love the film mostly because it's an opera, complete with an ethereal overture. The only Trek soundtrack to get regular traction on my listening queue.

I do also really like the costume design, set design, lighting, etc. As an audiovisual experience TMP is basically unmatched in Trek for me.

All things considered, it's not a bad film -- thoughtful, with great music and pretty good visuals. But I dislike the very obvious attempt to make it 2001: A Space Odyssey -- that and the ridiculous numbers of shots with guys in space suits. It'd make for a great drinking game, though.

Do you think if TMP was loyal to the original serIes that would have worked or not.

I wouldn't necessarily say it wasn't loyal to TOS. I would say that TMP was "The Cage" of the movies, while TWoK was the "WNMHGB". What Trek is is a very broad concept to my mind, and for me TMP went a bit too cerebral, while OTOH it could be argued that NuTrek went too much in the direction of an action-packed, none-too-serious episode.

I prefer the SLV and find that an almost perfect film. What I don't like and would want changed is the incomplete shot when Kirk is exiting the ship and the bad matte painting of the saucer in the Wing Walk shot near the end.

What do I like...

The music. The opening Klingon battle. The transporter accident. The wormhole scene was alright. I like the scene where Bones, Chapel, and Kirk talk to Spock and he sort of blanks them.

Really, really dull film though. Easily my least favourite of the 11.

It looked and sounded great. It really did. Still the best the Enterprise has ever looked.

Wish they'd come up with a better story than Where Nomad Has Gone Before, though.

I really liked the brief scene on Vulcan and wished we saw more of it.

I guess we'll never see Vulcan again, though. Thanks a lot, reboot...

I liked the visuals, the soundtrack, the sheer epic scope it tried to invoke.

I disliked the boring, lackluster plot, the shitty uniforms, how stiff Kirk was throughout the whole movie, and especially the ending. Not the ideas it presented, but the fact that Kirk, the friggen hero, is reduced to a spectator reacting to the actions taken by Decker, the new guy! That's no way to introduce Star Trek to the big screen! We wanted Kirk and Spock solving the problem, not acting as mere witnesses. The least they could have done was have a race against time for Kirk to get the Enterprise out of V'Ger as it was evolving, lest the Enterprise get converted with it.

Where no topic has been before.

Okay, here we go:
Positives:
- score
- the tour of the Enterprise
- score
- McCoy showing up ("I need you" is the first time we see Kirk realizing he's in trouble)
- i really liked the original V'ger probe, even though it looked like a scratch on the negative. Alien and terrifying.
- the plot, once we get behind introducing everyone and a 20 minute flyby of blue fog plus the fact that its Nomad remastered
- the final V'ger fades to Enterprise scene

Negatives:
- the big one: we meet Kirk at Starfleet and he acts like a complete jerk. No explanation no background. In 1979 we expected Hero-Kirk not Jerk-Kirk. I'm of the opinion they needed a Kirk/Nomura scene where Kirk literally begs to get out there and Nomura reluctantly gives him the not-yet-ready "E" since every other ship is preparing for defense (and a Nomura scene congratulating Kirk at the end).
- Decker isn't exactly Captain Harriman but its close in the first scenes. There's no chemistry and he's too insubordinate to an Admiral.
- Kill the transporter accident. Irrelevant. Might have been relevant if they TRANSPORTED off V'ger at the end, but heck, why bring that up?
- Spock's arrival. He's just too stoic and shortly thereafter very needy. Doesn't add up.
- Never a fan of the Ilia probe, but i guess Nomad was unavailable. Couldnt we have had something more interesting and then the happy couple at the end anyway?
- Still not sure what the wormhole bought.
- The absence of Kirk muttering "where's Jackson Roykirk when you need him" during the sandwich scene.
