What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Gothos?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Robert Reed is no longer alive. Maybe Gary Cole and Shelley Long?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

I wasn't intending to diss the Bee Gees. (I kinda meant a piano verion of Staying Alive, but overexplaining goofy ideas reduces their simplicity)

Perhaps Elton's "Benny and the Jets" would be more amusing. something with actual piano playing. Or Trelane could force Kirk to sing "Rocket Man".

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Yeah, but he isn't playing a piano...it's a harpsichord. :)

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Well, just saw the Remastered episode at 12 noon today and here's what changed:

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

-Opening shot of the Enterprise entering the area where Gothos lies.

-Approaching shots of a new, Venus-like Gothos partially shaded with a day/night terminator eclipsing one hemisphere.

-The Enterprise orbiting Gothos, which is not only Venus-like with swirling sulfur/methane clouds but also has bright flashes of lightning in its upper atmosphere.

-The new shots where Trelane makes Gothos "chase" the Enterprise are a lot, lot, LOT better looking and more believable, with the ship making more dynamic turns, twists and banks to avoid getting hit by the planet as it swoops around and at it.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

While often the Boston channel airs it Saturday nights at 7, THIS is one of the weeks they bumped it to Monday morning at 1:05am. :( And this is my favorite episode! (If, for no other reason, it earned me an A in Myths & Legends class.) :)

If you haven't seen it yet(which I'm assuming from your post)TiVo or VCR this one if at all possible if you're not going to be home. Some of the syndication edits ruin bits of dialogue, but its worth it for the new planet and Enterprise effects as well as the classic story.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

TiVo has it locked in for Sunday night/Monday morning at 1:05am. :( I'm disappointed they didn't net the the 7pm slot this week.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

At first, TOS Remastered was hard to find in my area because the local Fox and CW channels couldn't nail down a good pair of weekend slots for their episodes. Took a couple of months for them to decide when and where to air the show, and we had to put up with three consecutive repeats of "The Naked Time" while the local programming directors made up their sorry minds.

^ UGH ! ^

What a way to confuse viewers =P

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Imagine it.

THREE CONSECUTIVE Sundays of "The Naked Time." With no new episodes on Saturday at 12 noon until a week or so later.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Dammit, they didn't do any remastering of the smashed remains of Trelane's machine. :( It still looked like a random junkheap. Is that the best they could do?

I mean, they fixed Norman's insides in "I, Mudd" so that it no longer looked like random Radio Shack parts. Why couldn't they have done that here too?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

I liked the new Gothos; and it was kind of nice to see the approach to Colony Beta 6. I'm glad they didn't mess with Trelane's parents; I've always liked that effect and thought it was fine the way it was. I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't do anything with the mirror machine, but it's not that big a deal.

Shows you what I remember. :o

I missed this one, the 2:30 am time slot was not worth it. It used to be an hour earlier, but lately they've actually show a crappy ass movie before it. WHY? No one is staying up to watch some edited for t.v. b-movie! They might be staying up to watch some edited for t.v. b-grade t.v. show, though! :p

Why do they even show it at all?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Maybe the mirror thing is a retroactive red herring.

Since we later find out that his power doesn't really come from the mirror. It could be a kind of tribute to some 19th centure rube goldberg machine with all the nonsense pops and 'boings' when it gets shot. Maybe Trelayne created it to look like an antique machine albeit with major capabilities.

Could be time constraints...or maybe the shape of the jagged, shattered mirror glass along with the flying sparks and flames made it hard to go in and digitally insert something in a believable fashion.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

I always thought the "machine" was a weird non sequitur in the plot. Trelane clearly didn't need it, so what was the point?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

I've always imagined that the machine was the equivalent of 'training wheels' to help Trelane use his powers, and that his use of it would diminish over time.

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

He DID later mention he had other methods of instrumentality at his disposal. The mirror WAS Trelane's focal point. Otherwise why did shooting it allow them to escape?

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See For The Squire of Got

Odd that a species of non-corporeal, Q-like entities like Trelane and his people would even NEED human-like mechanical contraptions and devices to channel and focus power, even in individuals with rudimentary, undeveloped abilities.

Maybe it's because I secretly wanted him so badly to be a "Q" type alien that I always thought he was being smart and talking about his natural ability. Kirk destroying the machine in the mirror might have been a momentary distraction for reasons I talk about below.

They didn't. Trelane did, because he was a child.

I always figured the device in the mirror was either some kind of amplifier-like toy, or (my favorite interpretation) some sort of "leash" his parents placed on him to reduce his abilities. Maybe they did this because Trelane either wasn't mature enough to have full control of his powers, or his powers simply weren't strong enough and this was a challenge/test/puzzle for him. The day he over came the seemingly primitive (yet complex) device, was the day he became a Q...err...a big kid.

Exactly. Something of educational/nutritional value his parents gave him. And you could still see why he was so mad when Kirk destroyed it....he didn't want to get in trouble with his parents.
