What Changes Would You Like To See For "Charlie X"?

And come on they left Kirk's 'quick shirt change' from the standard Gold to his Command Green wraparound tunic as he emerges onto the bridge from the elevator after Charlie asked if he could come along to hear the Antares final message.

- (in the corridor Kirk is wearing the standard Gold Command Tunic when he enters the turbo lift and the Green wraparound Tunic when he arrives on the bridge).

IMO - they're slacking here. ;)

I know you're joking. How/why would they change this?
Anyway, everyone knows the turbo lift is just like the Batpole, only in reverse.
Quick-change-on-the-way-to-the-bridge-fresh-as-a-daisy.

BTW, just read on wikipedia: Charlie X's inappopriate patting was an imitation of an earlier moment he saw where a crewman patted another on the butt.

I suppose this was cut for the TOS-R syndication? I wonder how they would have filmed this without looking awkward.

I didn't see this one, but did they remove his second "when I came aboard" at the end? That always sounded stupid.

You know, with the new spaceship effects, this makes it the very first time any "series version" shot of the Enterprise were used in this episode. Until now, everything was all stock footage from the pilots and it was the only regular (post-WNMHGB) episode to feature only the pilot version of The Enterprise.

You suppose correctly. I actually laughed out loud when I saw this edit. Charlie now seemed like a misogynistic frat boy instead of the shy, well-intentioned misfit.

For those of you new to TOS and watching the Remastered episodes, you really should see the original copies. You're missing a lot of stuff.

Actually, six and a half. But that's bad enough. :(

I miss the wholly unedited "Special Editions" of TOS that Sci-Fi ran back in 1998 and 1999. Ninety minutes long with commercials, packed with Shatner and Nimoy commentary and completely uncut. All the original footage was left intact the way it first aired forty years ago, only digitally remastered for the best color and sound yet...at least until the Remastered edits came out.

If Paramount was smart, those interviews with the actors and such from SciFi's 90-minute uncuts would be included in the TOS-R DVD's.

True. So very true.

I hated it when Sci-Fi ditched the uncut, 90-minute editions for one-hour, truncated edits with sloppy cuts that stood out like a sore thumb. Those were the ones Sci-Fi ran until a couple of years ago...the edits where a scene would fade out/transition right in the middle of Kirk-Spock or Spock-McCoy dialogue we all know by heart.

Those were definitely butcher edits. They actually made the cuts for syndication look good by comparison.

Agreed.

I never thought anything would make 1980s and early 90s local syndicator edits look great in comparison, but the shitty job the Sci-Fi Channel people did to TOS starting in 1999 did it.

I'm relieved that my self-imposed embargo on TOS for a number of years allowed me to avoid having ever seen the Skiffy cuts.

It also has allowed me to REALLY enjoy the TOS-R episodes 'cause it had been so long since I'd watched ANY version of the show.

I just caught this episode. The Enterprise and Antares shots were okay, but I hated the Thasian ship. I loved the "indescribable blob of energy" they originally had. It was something our limited human eyes couldn't make out clearly. Now, it's a big green cartoon of a standard "alien" ship quickly sliding in and suddenly stopping. Very below par and more like something you'd see on Space Rangers.

Otherwise, they did good.

Agreed. The new Thasian "ship" looked too much like a cartoonish blob...like something from a FUTURAMA episode.

I liked the Thasian ship; I thought it had a nice Animated Series really-strange-design aesthetic to it.

To be honest, I don't remember the Thasian ship being in the original effects. Didn't they just talk about it coming into range and then have Wobble Head appear on the bridge?

They showed it on screen as a green glowing ball. I am one of those who don't understand why the producers flt the need to replace that original 'look' since the Thasians were just formless energy beings; and even the one who appeared on the bridge stated "I took this form centuries ago that I might converse with your kind."

Charkie even said "I can't even touch them!" further proving they're formless. Given that, why would their energy ship have such a distinct form?

It was kind of a translucent green blob on the screen, wavering around a little like a mirage.
