Discovery has me excited because I get to watch new Star Trek with my youngest son. Who was born in 2007, and this will be his first Star Trek series produced during his life.
I'm a Star Trek fan since the 60s and I've always wanted Discovery to be set in Prime (our universe), but ...
- I've written how I'd like to see it not tied to the look and feel of TOS, or be as canonically self-conscious as Enterprise, but something more contemporarily predictive of our future - not from the 60s' point of view - to align Prime back into our reality.
- I've written how I'd like to see Star Trek done in the Game of Thrones style with all the serialization and mature content therein. Though that might put off some parents from family viewing.
So while I qualify for your concerns, I certainly do not fit them.
You're overgeneralizing here. There were those who wanted Prime, and there were those who wanted Prime that was specifically post Nemesis. I was in that later group. However, I'm fine with the time period and if I could've picked a time period that had to be a prequel, that's the period I would have chosen. But, either way, I'm glad it's in the Prime universe. There are always outliers. But there weren't many folks clamoring for a show that took place between Enterprise and Star Trek. For many folks, they were equating "Prime" with post-Nemesis.
The focus so far has been on a single word, "Prime." There have been many other quotes from people involved in the production that have been ignored, and indicate that the new show might not be as "prime" as some would like. As far as I know, no cast has been announced and not a single frame has been shot. We don't know at this point in time what "Fuller's Prime" means.
Completely wrong
The fuss is about it being one, continuing universe. Not a reboot. Character continuity, rather then some narrow-minded obsession about production details.
I love the original Trek universe. The one with Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Archer. And I'm excited Discovery will be part of that universe.
And, there's been a surprising and unwarranted degree of certainty from "non-primers" that it'll only be Prime in name.
Oh I will be....I was fifty on fifty on prince Lestat. It was definitely a step up on the last one, and felt like someone doing an Anne Rice impression. Plus I like the Halloween Tradition of a new chronicles to read.
I don't get the big deal, honestly. It is all Star Trek. At least for me it is.
So I can only repeat myself: I'm happy we are actually seeing a continuation (or, rather prequel) of the original Trek universe. Not the reboot. The differences are subtle, and only matter in-universe, and for some fans. But I'm one of those.
At their own peril.Writers do this all the time.
I guess the reason why it is so annoying is because it reflects the unwarranted certainty presented by those in the other threads that the Prime universe is dead and you're an idiot if you think otherwise. You were wrong then and you might well be wrong now. No one here knows anything for certain. Why exactly is that a problem? Unless it is hitting a nerve and causing uncertainty for some, it can be filed away as unsubstantiated speculation.
But, cut it out with certainty act. You don't know anything more than one else here.
I liked Prince Lestat, in that it dropped everything but the original trilogy, David's bodyswap and some of Armand and Marius' background, shedding almost the entire franchise apart from that, including the godawful Blackwood lot.
Not sure why we're calling him Prince since he is now the King of the Damned, I was hoping for more development from Amel, but that might be the B-plot to the novel.
Eh, the last one was strangely grounded, this one sounds wacky enough to go in a whole new direction.
.....and that we should just let it go, what was your reaction when you heard that this show is taking place in the prime universe? Were you glad that the prime universe is coming back?
I did use it once just recently in this thread! I guess it's not worthwhile if no one noticed!@Mr Awe: Just curious... Despite a couple of people saying things like "Multi-quote is your friend," you will not assimilate. Are you trying to prove that resistance is not futile?
I suspect it will be more of a "broad strokes" depiction of the Prime Universe. It would definitely work, since there's really no need to reference everything in the Prime Universe right down to the minutest details.
But really, who on Earth cares what universe it takes place in, as long as it's good?

This thread is only for commenting about things people do wrong, such as saying Prime is dead and we'll never see it again.I did use it once just recently in this thread! I guess it's not worthwhile if no one noticed!![]()
