I'd like this a hundred times if possible. One of the best memes I've ever seen!
I think TNG is the most boring trek created.
But in execution it is some people in weird clothes having "wacky hijinks"(tm) in 1980s San Francisco... Oooh so Star Trek!
I sense sarcasm, but I direct you to City on the Edge of Forever, Tomorrow is Yesterday, A Piece of the Action, Times Arrow, Past Tense, Little Green Men, Trials and Tribbleations, Futures End...
One slight difference:
Original Kirk and crew went back to 1986, where a 1986 song made by - was the dude a real band or was it a fake song? Sounds great either way...
As someone who liked the Beastie Boys song, it's still used out of place.
Then again, was Picard listening to original Bizet and Satie or a recreation? Okay, no robust sound recording devices existed in 18whocares, so how come there wasn't a 23rd century recreation from some weirdo who was really into the BB the same way all of today's teenieboppers aren't into The Cramps?
All terrible episodes in my mind, especially the first one.
But even so it's a bit of a difference whether it's a TV episode where they use pre-existing sound stages and costumes to save budget or maker a whole feature film about that. As I said before I have trouble seeing Star Trek IV as being very accessible to non-Trek fans.
While I conceede that the majority (more than half) of those episodes are daft....I think it’s been extremely clear for 35 years now that TVH owed its box office success to its accessibility to non-Trek fans.
We have to constantly remind ourselves that our own unique tastes are not the reality of others. It’s a mistake I see made by opinionated fans here almost hourly.
I don't know if its necessarily controversial or not, but I think the next Trek focused documentary should specifically be about the 70s fandom. To me its an inherently fascinating time period, not only for the early creation of conventions, but that its a novel portrait of a show that at one point so thoroughly belonging to a fanbase in terms of relevance and activity.
Stuff like the modern birth of Slash Fic is an obvious interesting talking point, but even beyond that it still feels like there's unsung story of how it was often female fans creating many of the fanzines and actual conventions that quickly allowed the growing popularity of the show to resonate. Even some examination of how things changed when Paramount got more involved in the con scene and what shifts took place in the fanbase itself when TMP finally came out and ushered in an era actual Trek content would be remarkably interesting.
(I'm aware that realistically this kind of film would appeal to about me and 10 other people, but I'd love to see it.)

I've met a man who saved money for a year to buy himself a tailor-made TNG command uniform (late TNG not the early one)... I mean that's some dedication!

Good for you. But virtually everything Star Trek-related that you've enjoyed since the late 80s is due to the success of TNG. It was immensely successful and it was this success that laid the groundwork for what came after, and you'd do well to acknowledge that.

Survivor is one of the most successful television series of the past twenty years. It also sucks so hard it could give the vacuum of space competition.
